Former President John Dramani Mahama has said he was honest to Ghanaians about the state of Ghana’s economy in the run-up to the 2016 elections but the rosy promises of the then flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) swayed votes in his favour resulting in the loss of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He noted that he had an “incumbency disadvantage” adding that he had managed the economy and “I knew what the economy could give the people and I told the people the truth that we need more hard work to be able to get out of where we are; my opponent promised heaven and you have the constraints of not being able to promise all the rosy things he was doing”.
He continued: “…The people made a choice and voted me out.”
However, Mr Mahama pointed out that “it is part of the learning process for all of us”.
For him, “if he [President Nana Akufo-Addo] is able to deliver on his promises, good; if he is not able too, the people would have learnt that not all that glitters is gold”.
He made this known on Thursday, May 4 at the three-day World Economic Forum (WEF) 2017 being held in Durban, South Africa, when asked to share some of the things that could have led to his loss in the 2016 elections.
Meanwhile, Mr Mahama has charged leaders to be accountable to citizens in order to build trust in public institutions.
He explained that citizens are entitled to know what public funds are used for. For him, this is one of the important ways to build confidence in public institutions of the country.
“Every month when I work, part of my salary is taken as tax, so as a citizen I want to be sure that whoever has been elected into government is going to be accountable on how he uses that money to improve my life,” he said.
He was of the view that leaders must be held accountable to the people that voted them into office.

foooolish man and foooolish talk, , idioooot , only a vile and miscreant will talk rubbish like that, what of those who do not engage in stealing .lying and corruption. mahama and his families and n,d,c executive will have to account to the people of ghana for the $37 billion dollars loan they took for 8 years or there will not be peace for them, from ghana people
I think i agree with Tahiru from Tamale: If you were promising hell and somebody was promising heaven, why should i be so ***barred word*** to follow you. But Mr. Mahama, were you managing the economy to the benefit of g-o-a-t-s? If you knew the economy very well, we knew the resources Ghana had very well. You think you are cunning, but you are practicing ignorance. Cant you ever stop lying? What happened to your lame horse? You renovated Accra Int. Airpot in over $100m. Ethiopia built a new world standard one with a little over $23m. You were truthful?
Oh Mahama, when will you accept defeat and exit our political scene. You were given a chance to lead and you failed. Simple as that. All these excuses won't change anything. You don't even seem to know why you lost. Today is lame horse, tomorrow it's Nana Addo promised heaven. When will you accept your failure as a leader?
Are you still talking, Mahama?
Yes you were truthful. No wonder you were dancing to YENTIE OBIAA song after commissioning over bloated contracts. Truthful indeed!
John Mahama will not cease to amuse me. He said he was honest to Ghanaians? John is better you keep silent to maintain the little respect your NDC sympathisers have for you. you were simply corrupt, incompetent, arrogant and directionless. Your Ford bribe, Bus branding, wanton dissipation of state funds, stealing, cronism were among thebreason for your lost. Do honest assessment of the factors that led to your loss and stop behaving like a pampered child.
When you were promising hell, why should I follow you. Nana Addo was promising heaven. It will be better for your to keep quiet. There is nothing you will say that will convince us. It is toooooo late. It's Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo we prefer. So see you in 2026 even if only you be elected. Lest I forget. Are you not Ex President? Or you want to be called Ex, Ex, Ex President
IN FACT, I PREFER THE ONE WHO PROMISED HEAVEN TO THE ONE WHOSE RECORD AS PRESIDENT IS QUICKLY WISHED AWAY BY GHANAIANS. YOUR REFERENCE POINT IS THE 2016 ELECTION RESULT. TWEAAAAAA.
JDM, you said Nana Addo promised Heaven, while your NDC are were promising Insult, He cant do it.Nana Addo can not be president in these country. Man proposed God disposed. I know you are a Christian, it is written in the bible that any child that insult his or her father, even not your parent alone but elderly person is cursed. The bible quoted all the people says AMEN on you means you are cursed.
my friend, shaddap!! promised what and promised what. haaba! you've lost, you've lost. let's think and stop breaking our ears.
