Former President John Dramani Mahama has said he was honest to Ghanaians about the state of Ghana’s economy in the run-up to the 2016 elections but the rosy promises of the then flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) swayed votes in his favour resulting in the loss of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He noted that he had an “incumbency disadvantage” adding that he had managed the economy and “I knew what the economy could give the people and I told the people the truth that we need more hard work to be able to get out of where we are; my opponent promised heaven and you have the constraints of not being able to promise all the rosy things he was doing”.
He continued: “…The people made a choice and voted me out.”
However, Mr Mahama pointed out that “it is part of the learning process for all of us”.
For him, “if he [President Nana Akufo-Addo] is able to deliver on his promises, good; if he is not able too, the people would have learnt that not all that glitters is gold”.
He made this known on Thursday, May 4 at the three-day World Economic Forum (WEF) 2017 being held in Durban, South Africa, when asked to share some of the things that could have led to his loss in the 2016 elections.
Meanwhile, Mr Mahama has charged leaders to be accountable to citizens in order to build trust in public institutions.
He explained that citizens are entitled to know what public funds are used for. For him, this is one of the important ways to build confidence in public institutions of the country.
“Every month when I work, part of my salary is taken as tax, so as a citizen I want to be sure that whoever has been elected into government is going to be accountable on how he uses that money to improve my life,” he said.
He was of the view that leaders must be held accountable to the people that voted them into office.

I am sorry to say that Ghanaians love liar, you just go there and start lying and all the women will follow you. Nana and Bawumia studied lies and poured it on Ghanaians. This Nana went and told galamsey people that NDC are telling lies that if he win he will sack them but today what did he do to them? he told all SHS students to vote for him so he can make SHS free for all but today he says only new students will get free SHS, even with that no one is sure. He said electricity bill was higher than rent but today it is even more higher even lorry fares higher than ever too. So if Nana is not a liar then I can't think far oooo. Mahama is 100% correct, Nana lied and continue to lie to Ghanaians.
Mr. ex President We are in a comfortable lead. Lies to the very end. come again.
My 'people stole' from the government's coffers, they insulted the electorate and I showed no leadership. Every state institution was robbed and that is why I am standing here. Akowhi nkoaaaaaaa Onyame ahu wo. Tweaaaaaaaaaa I.N.C.O.M.P.E.TENCE
...i was co-rrupt but he wasn't...
Nana will surely perform by the grace God has given him. President Mahama, please get it straight, Nana is Aman of destiny-God's chosen to bring unprecedented development to Ghana. You had the privileged opportunity to govern this beautiful country and leave a mark but you chose to do your own thing. Now God has rejected you, the people have rejected you. Go make your peace with God, perhaps you could chart a new path for yourself. For now whatever force you possessed is completely spent never to be recovered. A word to the wise is......
LIARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, BLATANT LIARRRRRRRRRRRRRR! YOU TOLD GHANAIANS YOU HAVE BROUGHT DUBAI TO GHANA, YOU MADE SO MUCH NOISE WITH YOUR ST.U.P1D GREENBOOK. YOU TOLD GHANAIANS THE ECONOMY WAS ON A SOUND FOOTING MEANWHILE, YOU DOWN-GREW THE ECONOMY FROM 14% TO 3.5%. IS MAHAMA NOT ASHAMED OF HIMSELF???? JUST LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF V8s MAHAMA PURCHASED AND DISTRIBUTED TO MUSICIANS, HIS GIRLFRIENDS LIKE MZBEL, MOVIE ACTORS LIKE JOHN DUMELO AND OTHER NDC F00LSOLDIERS. IBRAHIM MAHAMA WAS DOING ALL HE WANTS AND LIVING ABOVE THE LAW. LORDINA MAHAMA WAS WORSE, LIVING BEYOND A FIRST LADY STATUS. SUCH EFFRONTERY AND WASTE OF RESOURCES WILL NOT BE ENTERTAINED ANYMORE. MAHAMA IS A WASTE OF RESOURCE AND A DISGRACE TO THE NORTHERN REGIONS OF GHANA.
Mahama is living in dream world. We the people will reject him a million times. He was tested on many occasions and he failed on abysmally on all occasions. A leader who thinks constructing a mere road at a localised area brings transformational changes will always be rejected. This is 2017 where the world is moving so fast and we had this Mahama character disturbing our ears with his corrupt loot and share government. After all this, he still haven't learned anything....I mean how?
How about you keep your mouth shut for the next 100 years? 😑
Mr former President....at the moment I can tell you that the great people of GHANA have hope for the future. This is the start of change that bring results. If a country doesn't have any trust in the leadership, regardless of how much money you throw at the citizenry, it will not work. The Nana Addo presidency is given people hope and that is how you transform the system. Hope brings assurances and that compels people to invest which will uplift some much needed economic growth for the people. So Mr Mahama, just sit back and watch how a country is truly run. Your administration was the worst Ghana ever witnessed and it will stay like that till thy kingdom come.
This man is really the limit. He conveniently declined to tell his audience the kind of crazy l00t1-ng that he and his friends ,family and cronies were engaged in.If we are to use the yardstick the founder of his party set in the revolution, John Mahama would have been shot a hundred times already
