The hall of the Yilo-Klo Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region was turned into a boxing ring on Wednesday, this week, when youth from the area invaded the place and subjected the assembly members to severe pummeling .
According to the aggrieve youth, the assembly members allegedly took various sums of money from President Akufo-Addo's nominee for the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Ebeneezer Kupulor, but still went ahead to vote against him for the second time.
They, therefore, went to the premises of the assembly to force the members to cough up the amount they allegedly took from the MCE nominee.
Hours after the invasion and subsequently thumping, 44 of the assembly members, representing the 2/3rd majority, passed a resolution calling on President Akufo-Addo to renominate Kupulor, and that they were now ready to vote for him.
In the first round of voting barely a week ago, the MCE nominee polled 32 out of the 62 votes cast. In the second round, which took place this Wednesday, Mr. Kupulor improved his previous record just by one vote. He recorded 33 out of the 62 votes cast.
To the youth, the assembly members had stabbed their man in the back, and, therefore, went to the premises to demand the alleged money they had taken before they (assembly members) went home to spend it.
The assembly members, having realized their mistake, started fleeing in all directions, but some of them were not lucky, as they were seized and subjected to severe beatings until police re-enforcement arrived to control the situation.
Those who could not flee were also holed up in the Assembly Hall for well over an hour, before they were freed by the police.
The assembly member for Kyeremanteng Dorguanor, Joseph Mimimley, was grabbed by the youth and given two hefty slaps on the checks, whilst others held his shirt pulling him back and forth.
Mr. Joseph Mimimaley confirmed in a telephone interview with The Chronicle that he as attacked and slapped by the rampaging youth.
The Chronicle also discovered that the windscreen of the vehicle of a former MCE for the area, Christian Tettey,w as not spared, as the youth believed he had a hand in the rejection of the nominee.
