Director of Elections of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Samuel Ofosu Amofo has thrown salvoes at the nomination of the Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Madam Jean Adukwei Mensa as the new Chairperson for the Electoral Commission (EC).
According to him, Madam Jean Mensa is more than likely to act in favour of the ruling NPP.
He said the NDC as a party does not have any issue with her competency or qualification, but rather, her biased nature towards the NPP.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo said the President's nominee must be someone who is unbiased and not affiliated to any party, unlike this nomination.
Chronicling some events that happened some 3 years ago, he said the NDC were part of the IEA’s political party platform but they boycotted due to Jean Mensah's inclination towards the NPP and her posture on certain issues.
“It undermines the credibility of the whole Electoral Commission,” Samuel Ofosu Ampofo told Kwami Sefa Kayi in an interview on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Tuesday morning.
He said the President should not have settled on someone who has a big issue with their biggest political opponent, as there are many Ghanaians qualified for the job.
“Today, when you google (Jean Mensah), you will see the running battle the NDC has had with the woman . . . you know the NDC pulled out of the IEA presidential debate because of the woman’s posturing and certain things she said. It got to a time she even insulted Koku Anyidoho and the NDC,” he alleged.
Asked about the specifics of the running battle they had with the IEA Boss, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo declined to go into details but gave the assurance that at the appropriate time the party would come out to state those facts.
He raised an instance where prior to the IEA debate in 2016, Madam Jean Mensa dealt with Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, a former Foreign Affairs Minister and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West constituency in the Central Regon, instead of contacting party officials.
“She sidelined NDC, went and dealt with individuals who cannot take decisions for the party . . . she communicated with Hon. Hanna Tetteh . . . you deal with the party not an individual in the party . . . She doesn’t represent NDC when it comes to taking a decision at the highest level of the party whether we are going to attend a presidential debate or not. It is the General Secretary of the party and the National Chairman who represents the NDC when it comes to NDC matters,” he told Peace FM.
He said these among other things made the NDC withdraw from the IEA debate.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has named the boss of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Jean Adukwei Mensah, as the new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
Her appointment follows the removal from office last month of the former Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Charlotte Osei, and the two deputies, Mr. Amadu Sulley and Mrs. Georgina Opoku Amankwah, by President Akufo-Addo, after the Committee established by the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, to investigate petitions brought against them, recommended their removal.
A statement signed by the Chief of Staff Hon. Frema Opare, also named Mr. Samuel Tettey together with Dr. Eric Asare Bossman, as Deputy Chairpersons and Ms. Adwoa Asuama Abrefa, as a Member of the Commission
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday criticized the nomination of the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Jean Adukwei Mensah, as the new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, describing her as a "known pro-NPP and an avowed anti-NDC person".
General Secretary of the opposition party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, affectionately called ‘General Mosquito’, claims the Nana Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, has appointed its own referee to conduct and rig the 2020 presidential and parliamentary polls in their favour.

I have posted the above for all to read the double standards of the party called NDC. When the party was being bashed for not attending the NPP conference, Mosquito came out to tell the whole world that he was shocked Dr. Bawumia did not act when NDC did not show up at Koforidua because he, Mosquito had informed Dr. Bawumia at the one Week commemoration of the death of Amissah Arthur that his party was not attending. Was it right then for a whole Gen Sec to deal with an individual of a party instead of the Chairman or the Gen Sec? Bro. Sammy Foto come again or contact your Gen Sec to school you. This is why NDC does not learn.
Now Kwame Sefa Kayi is comparing NDC action with NPP but not long ago during NDC time, his chorus was "Do we have to continue like that". Today, he is citing examples and comparing. Best journalist indeed.
