The Dean of Studies and Research at the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS), Dr Eric Oduro Osae, says what the National Democratic Congress (NDC) needs is a new leader, going into future elections.
According to him, former President Mahama’s comeback will spell doom for the party in the future.
“Mahama shouldn’t have come back; he will rather give the NDC a tall order and it will be difficult to get someone who will be the face of the party in the future. I think what the NDC needs now is someone they can market, a new face,” he opined.
Mr Mahama has presented his official letter of intent to run for the flagbearer slot at the party’s Adabraka headquarters on Thursday, August 23, 2018.
In a video explaining his decision to stage a comeback, Mr Mahama said: “In coming to this firm decision, I have pondered deeply and soberly on the socio-economic and political landscape of our country today vis-à-vis the clear path we have started to build, aimed at positioning Ghana as a true middle-income country by modernising our dilapidated social and economic infrastructure and gradually inculcating in the Ghanaian, a sense of patriotism, self-belief and commitment to a one Ghana agendum“.
“I have taken into consideration, the groundswell of support, the never-ending calls, and encouragement from a large section of our party elders, members of our party, supporters and Ghanaians, from diverse backgrounds,” he added.
But speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Friday, Dr Oduro Osae said the NDC will be better off facing the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 elections with a new face as its candidate.
“John Mahama is the most marketed candidate in the NDC, he is one of the easiest to be marketed and then NDC will not incur a lot of cost marketing him. It may be easy for him to win but the margin is not going to be that wide”, Dr Osae noted.
The Dean of Studies and Research rather urged Mr Mahama to use his expertise as a former President to support other candidates.

NDC as a political party has no Tradition and philosophy. Their much touted or acclaimed Social Democrats is a borrowed one. Propaganda, lies, and populism have become a hallmark of the NDC. I can't remember the last time the NDC as a political party contributed ideologically and constructively to a national issue or discourse, except always struggling desperately on polemics and populism as if propaganda is the main opposition party policy. I listened to Mr. Goosie Tanoh and I said wow is this gentleman really, a member of the NDC? In the light of his intellect, credibility, and resolve to impart a positive change, I doubt, he fits in with the membership of the NDC. Is this guy, Ablakwa, not one of the boys with sharp teeth, who only insulted their political opponents to accord them their positions in Government. Bagbin is right, it is only he went off the board with his comments about disables. This should come as a good advice for the NDC. But they don't see it as such, because, they don't have any message or alternative policy to strive against NPP. Like I said above, propaganda is what they do best and Mahama is so far the best slot for that because he is the most resourceful in terms of flamboyant spending for campaign rallies.
Is it a problem losing an election? how many times did Nana lose? if you think Nana is winning then keep it to yourself and stop disturbing our ears, the man Mahama is qualified and want to stand if he is not good NDC will elect other candidate and if they elect him it means he is the best. He will put you all to shame when your old man Nana the liarrrrrr is defeated
Ghana people, you will continue to suffer. Let me tell you something, Mahama is going to loose the election woefully. Now if there is a new face, NDC will start the marketing now although he will not win the 2020 elections. By the time Ghanaians will be going to the pools in 2024, the new face will be well known and NDC will stand the chance. You those commenting should think ok. Mahama will never win, and you all know this for sure. NDC is only going to disgrace itself and bring you guys more frustration.
just look back in the last 8 years (4 as vice and 4 as president) you failed Ghanaians big time and you wan to come back, you think we are dump people.
Guy, opinions and advice are free in a democratic world. Take it or leave it but no insults please. But you know, a new face could pick and choose which NDC legacy to ride on. But JDM doesn't have that luxury because he has been in power for eight continuous year when every desirable thing in this country was in decline and the undesirable things, on the rise. But don't mind me. The verdict is out there. There are those who thought Nana Addo could never win an election but he believed in himself and his supporters stood their grounds. JDM could do the same
