Host of Peace FM’s flagship programme “Kokrokoo”, Kwami Sefa Kayi has called on religious leaders in the country to let their voices be heard on the matter of government’s decision to establish a National Cathedral in the heart of capital, Accra.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on March 6, 2018 unveiled an architectural design for the construction of a National Cathedral.
The Cathedral is aimed at fostering national cohesion and creating an avenue for national prayers and religious events to be held as part of the Akufo-Addo’s heritage to the country.
There are however several controversies over the site for the Cathedral with government intending to demolish some buildings and properties to have the project at Ridge in Accra.
The National Cathedral is to sit around a 14-acre garden and will have chapels, a baptistery, a music school, an art gallery, a Bible Museum and Documentation Centre - It is expected to seat 5,000 people in its main auditorium.
According to Mr. Sefa Kayi, the Cathedral though a laudable initiative by the government, he has serious issues over its intended location.
He questioned why the government is not thinking about spreading its tentacles by constructing the Cathedral in another ideal place other than the capital.
“The idea of having a National Cathedral is a laudable one but most importantly, we should reconsider its location. Have we thought about the traffic situation in the capital?”
He wondered why religious leaders like the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church, Dr Mensah Otabil and Archbishop Duncan Williams of the Action Chapel International, among others seem to have gone silent over the issue.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, in March 2017, inaugurated a 13-member Board of Trustees who will be in charge of the National Cathedral when it is completed.
The Board, largely constituted by heads of various church groups, have also been tasked to oversee the successful completion of the national chapel.
The board members include; Most Reverend Asante Antwi as the Chairman, Archbishop Charles Plamer Buckle as Vice Chairman and Prophet Kusi Boateng, who is the Secretary to the Board.
The rest are, Apostle Opoku Onyinah, Rev. Joyce Aryee, Moderator, Presbyterian Church, Cephas Amenyo, Right. Rev. Offei Akrofi, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams, Rev. Eastwood Anaba, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, Pastor Mensa Otabil, Rev Dr. Frimpong Manso and former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, Professor. Emmanuel Martey.
The ace broadcaster urged these renowned men of God to speak up on the issue and be loud about it and not allow government communicators to hold brief for them.
“(Pastor) Mensah Otabil, (Archbishop) Duncan Williams, Bishop Asante Antwi and other leaders on the Committee; why aren’t they talking? Why have they left explanations regarding the need for the Cathedral and source of funding to government Communicators?” he quizzed.

Kwame, have mercy on Mensah Otabil and leave him out of this;in d mist of d confusion surrounding him do u expect him to talk?
Because most Ghainains, especially the dishonest intellectuals don't think before they react or talk about issues. They make mockery of higher education. They will not speak, because empty-headed intellectuals, enjoying working for others with no minds to create opportunities for others and with no reputation to protect are waiting to pounce on them. Silence is golden!
Please guys, listen to Efo Kwame carefully. He wants the religious leaders to own the project and speak to the issues but looks like,as it stands now, they have't mastered the courage yet to speak. Can you blame them. Let any one of them speak and he will be the target for all the insults that the opposition NDC and others have stored up in their bellies.
Sefa kayi is missing the point. come to central london and you will understand why its always busy there. the reason is simple, all the top attractions in the UK can be found there. the city of london attracts millions of tourists everyday and its difficult to drive through central london hence the congestion charge to encourage people to use public trnasport than using their own vehicles. As a country developing, we need some of these landmarks in an areas close to important edifices. trafalgar square, Buckingham palace, london eye and the rest are all close to each other. come back again. the place earmarked for this cathedral is the best.
Kwame l this building of cathedral was hutch by NAADA & his NPP. These pastors don't understand this whole thing there4 cannot speak to it. Remember they all have their cathedrals. @Mike Oppong sometime l pity people who think like you comparing Ghana to other countries. Just bcos some other countries broke down their dilapidated structures to make way for new project means Ghana should also go that way when we have large vast of land in Accra if it is necessary to site the cathedral in Accra. Can't they site it in Shai Hills, Pamprah etc to open the community up for development. You people must think outside the box. In any case why national cathedral? the 1D1F mantra is waiting for funds to start, the districts are waiting for their 1million US dollars, The northern people are waiting for their dams, to say the least.
Kwame, for goodness sake stay away from this! Please I love you. Don't meddle in this affairs. It's a dangerous ground for you to tread this path. Thank you, my dear brother!
I think Ghanaians need a national cathedral. The national theater is too small for national events including national prayer meetings, church service and other faith programs. This is will be an important edifice in the heart of Ghana, Accra, attracting thousands of tourists if not millions domestically and internationally. Why? do you think the Senior Pastors are opposed to this project? They are not. This will be a house of prayer for the nation and other faith based activities and education. I vote for this.
When will Peace FM put the Kookrokoo program online? Since August 29, there has been no update. We are outside Ghana and depend on the online streaming.
They would not talk Efo Kwami. See what politics is doing to them.
@Mike Oppong. Non***sense.Does education in UK has double track systems,do they have open gutters in London.Do they abandoned infrastructure, demolish government residents and rather go in for rented ones with tax payers money? If you are well educated and open minded you won't be comparing London to disgustingly dirty city called Accra.
