The Minority in Parliament says it cannot accept as credible, free and fair, the outcome of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election won by the New Patriotic Party (NPP's) candidate Lydia Seyram Alhassan on Thursday.
The Minority Leader, Hon Haruna Iddrisu, stated the position of the Minority in Parliament House on the by- election when he addressed the Parliamentary press corps on the issue.
He said the violence that characterized the by- election resulting in the assault on Hon. Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo-Prampram, has dented the country's democratic evolution.
The Minority Leader therefore demanded an immediate investigation into the incident to identify and punish the perpetrators of the violence.
Speaking to journalists at Parliament House, Hon Samuel Nartey George accused the executive arm of government of being behind the violence that occurred at the election.
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has condemned the violence that marred Thursday’s by-election at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in no uncertain terms.
In a statement, President Akufo-Addo said “The isolated incident of violence, which occurred in the early stages of the election, was unfortunate and regrettable, and I condemn it in no uncertain terms.”
“A by-election should be a peaceful and happy event, no matter how competitive. The Police is committed to conducting a rapid inquiry into the matter, and I expect all persons who are found culpable, at the end of the process, to face the full rigours of the law,” he added.
