Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otukonor has bemoaned the incident that happened at Ayawaso West Woguon by-election, adding that it cannot be compared to the 'Let My Vote Count Alliance' protest saga back in 2015.
According to him, what happened in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election is unprecedented, something that has never happened in the history of Ghana.
Speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, he indicated that on the 6th of February 2019, they will be going on a demonstration to send a clear signal to President Akufo-Addo to sit up especially on security issues in the country.
"Violence and killings have become more of the norm than exception in this country. No week passes without another act of killings, kidnapping, attacking leaders etc. under the NPP regime.
"They are killing us . . . we are calling on the government to up its game in our security system," he stressed.
About eight opposition political parties are joining forces in a massive demonstration on Thursday, February 7, 2019 to register their displeasure in the violence that marred the recently held by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
The opposition parties coming together under the name: Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty include: the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the Ghana Consolidated People’s Party (GCPP), the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), the People’s National Convention (PNC), United Front Party (UFP), the EGLE Party and the All People’s Congress (APC).
The protest is dubbed 'aagbe wo' to wit 'we are being killed or they are killing us'.
In a statement, the Convener of the Coalition, Bernard Mornah said: the opposition parties hope to draw public attention to the “looming threat on [Ghana’s] democracy, peace and stability."
According to the group “as required by the Public Order Act 1994, Act 491, we wrote to notify the police and have subsequently had a fruitful meeting with the Greater Accra Regional Command. We assured them of our commitment to conduct a very peaceful and non-violent demonstration”
They are also calling "on all well-meaning Ghanaians to join in this mass action against oppression, injustice, electoral violence, vigilantism, police brutalities, rampant kidnapping and the breakdown of law and order.”
