Former National Security Advisor, Brigadier-General Nunoo-Mensah says hosting Ghana’s 62nd Independence Day celebration in the Northern region is laudable – but, “not really important”.
He explained that funds used to move the celebration to the Northern part of the country could have been channeled into education and health sector.
"I don’t hate the people in the north but I don’t think this was necessary. How much did government spent on all dignitaries to Tamale? Most of them went by air and government will bear all these costs. We have so many things to do as a nation; we need money to develop this country,” he said in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’.
The Former Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General Joseph [rtd] Nunoo-Mensah's comment comes after suggestion by some historians that the Independence Day celebration must be rotated each year in all 16 regions in the country.
But the former military capo said the idea will rather cost the nation than its benefit - “This thing is not done anywhere in the world. We will spend millions of cedis just to celebrate independence. Let’s use that money to develop the country”.
The Northern Regional capital, Tamale, on 6th March 2019 hosted the country’s 62nd Independence Day anniversary parade.
It was the first time the event is being held outside the national capital, Accra.

THE COST OF MOVING THE CELEB TO TAMALE SOUNDS THAN THE COST OF TRANSPORTING AKUA DONKOR TO ITALY TO TURN BOOKLETS UPSIDE DOWN. PAPA, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH LET NANA WORK FOR GHANA COS HE WAS COUNSELLED BY ABLE MEN AND WOMEN OF MORE WISDOM BEFORE THAT DECISION PLEASE.
Little mind always - approbating and re-probating as always. We all know the reason the Indece celebration was taken to the North - What amount of money is enough to buy the PEACE that people in that area are enjoying today? A whole brigadier talking loosely like this? Better be silent if have nothing reasonable to say massa.
Nunoo-Mensah has proved time without number to be out of touch, distach and disconnect. His solutions to our nation discourse at time times leave much to be desired. There is a nation to be built, and that calls for cohesion and a new of thinking.Sir, Ghana needs a news paradigm shift.
Not even age and grey hair could knock some sense into the skull of this m0r0n. I guess the celebrations in Accra have always been free of charge. NDC are such a pain in ghana's assssssss!
General, do you think before you talk? if it waste of money, it is not laudable at all please, Mr. General. Your mind is too weak to talk s..ense.
They should have done it at your backyard for FREE! Myopic and selfish man! Why always EVERYTHING in Accra?
You talk as if you are some angel coming from heaven. We know you ndc people and we know what you did when you were in government. O so today free SHS is now good and it should be funded, just listen to your self, are you not the same people who said free SHS won't be possible and it's not a good thing . All you knew was buying expensive V8 cars and range rovers and sharing them amongst your selves and a few greedy ones who are block headed like you . Mahama will never be a president again here in Ghana and ndc will remain in opposition for more than hundred years. may God punish you
There is a cost/benefit to every decision. Hope you have not forgotten that those invited guests from all regions who come to Accra all these years have cost implications. Always trying to find fault, when there is none. Please think through issues before opening your mouth.
Why oh! why is this man so negative in everything? He always appears to be bitter. Tamale is part of Ghana and equally deserves the celebrations to be held there. Even from my layman perspective, i can see the logic in the choice of Tamale being chosen. With the constant unrest and threats of such up north, this is a savvy move to bring an awareness of inclusion and progress. The economic benefit to the ordinnary people in Tamale cannot be overlooked. Rtd. Gen eeee! please spare us of your negativity. You were part of a government that wasted money on phantom guinea fowl misadventures and bus branding +hef+. Please spare us the backward thoughts. Next year God willing one of the new regions will host the celebrations. Please enjoy your retirement in peace.
I just don't know why some people only see costs in everything the government does. If you say the government spent money, did you consider who or what the money was spent on? Have you quantified how much money was injected into the local economy at Tamale. Hotel owners and workers, caterers, taxi and trotro drivers, food vendors etc. etc. were all in business. You need to quantify all the profits these people made, and compare with what the government spent, then you can determine whether we wasted money or not.
