The National Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku has commended St. Augustine’s College for emerging winners of the 2019 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ).
Sammi Awuku stressed that the success story of the "Augusco" students should not be lost in the memory of young Ghanaians because the school was the least ticked to win the trophy.
He was particularly impressed by the determination and fortitude the contestants showed during the quiz competition as well as the fully charged support St. Augustine's College alumni displayed saying “as human beings it is not good to let our dark past cloud our future…”
Making his submissions on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Mr. Awuku believed the tenacity of St. Augustine's is proof of the investments by President Nana Addo in education and so was utterly optimistic the free SHS policy of the government will not be in vain.
“The policy shows that Nana Addo Dankwa's free SHS is spreading equal opportunities to the Ghanaian children…a typical example was the one with St Peters and Tepa Senior High School and Wesley Girls and if you check the result, Tepa won over Wesley Girls SHS.
“We are sowing a seed in Ghana's educational system and in 8 years time, we will see the kind of people we are churning and that’s the only way we can beat on our chest and say that the youth are the future of this country...Education is the only means that the charcoal seller’s sons and the MD of a bank can meet around the same table to share ideas and to compete with it,” he said.
Mr. Awuku added that Ghana should place huge emphasis on practicals stating that "as we are grooming our young ones in Engineering and Maths, then as a country we should consider the practical aspect..."

FOLKS WE SHOULD GET POLITICS OUT OF EDUCATION, INFRASTRUCTURE, AGRICULTURE, HEALTH SECTOR, MICRO AND MACRO-ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT, FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, EC MANAGEMENT, JOBS AND BUSINESSES AND MANY OTHERS; GHANA STANDS TO LOOSE AT THE LONG RUN PERIOD.
Whether you guys like it or not FSHS has come to stay and majority of Ghanaians are optimistic about it and the future of the kids. Ask those teachers who went to teach in Jakonde free secondary education schools in Lagos state and other states. Despite challenges yet it enabled more kids to go to school and the result is overwhelming. Next year expect Fankyeneko SHS, Praprababida SHS etc edging out your so called grade A and B schools. Thanks to NPP no child will be left behind.
WITH A FREE SHS SYSTEM THE MENTALITY OF FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD CLASS SCHOOLS SHALL RADICALLY REDUCE. A TIME WILL COME WHEN PEOPLE WILL NOT CARE MUCH OF THE SCHOOL THEY GO BECAUSE WE SHALL BEGIN TO GET TOP CLASS STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY AS MODELS FOR MANY MANY SCHOOLS. FREE SHS SYSTEM IS THE BEST POLICY IN EDUCATION EVER PROVIDED TO THE NATION. MAY GOD BLESS NANA ADDO AND NPP GOVERNMENT. THE CONTINUING CRITICISM OF THE SYSTEM BY NDC GIVE TESTIMONY THAT THEY WOULD DO ALL THEY COULD TO SABOTAGE THE SYSTEM SHOULD GHANA EVER MAKE A MISTAKE TO TO VOTE FOR THEM. AND FOR GOD SAKE IT SHALL NEVER HAPPENED.
Massa stop those ***barred word*** analysis , the standard of education in the schools that got to semi final in the NSMQ will have been like the grade B or C schools . Those schools are heavily supported by the old boys and girls . Be careful with your comments . Because currently the students are complaining seriously about standards ,old student who have visited my Alma mater have complained about the deplorable state of basic infrastructure and are busily soliciting for funds to help my school . I am sure it is the same for most other schools but the government has also tired the hand of the PTA . If we don't through policies well and seek political advantage in some 10- 20 years shs standards will be like jhs , I remember years ago my big brother who used to attend private jhs ,was moved to public school because the had good teacher s who where committed ,let be careful of what we do today . Every right think Ghanaian with modest financial background will consider his son or daughter going to private SHS . Word to the wise is enough .
Sammy, but your logic is wrong. The FSHS is universal to all public Senior High Schools. Presec and St. Peters are also on FSHS, so st Augustine's win didn't come through FSHS policy. On the other hand, their win rather downplayed the importance of FSHS. St. Augustine invested privately in participants. The school built a private STEM center, hired consultants to train the teachers and students. I'm aware of schools that couldn't prepare this way because there was no internally generated funds for the administration to use to prepare the students. There were schools that couldn't perform well because of lack of funds to prepare well for the NSMQ.
