The Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says the governing party has proven it can be trusted with the education of Ghanaian children.
Speaking at the 63rd Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi on Saturday, December 31, 2023, Dr. Bawumia said, after seven years of investment in the free SHS policy and the positive impact it is having, the NPP presents a solid track record in managing the education of Ghanaian children.
Dr. Bawumia, who listed the successes of the Free SHS policy including increase in enrollment from 800000 to 1.4 million in seven years and the gender parity in enrollment, took a swipe at the critics saying "while the government rolled out the Free SHS policy, much to the excitement and relief of parents, some pessimists predicted doom for Free SHS".
He continued; "They said Free SHS was a scam. They said it was 419 and they said if they 2 billion cedis to spend, they won't spend it on Free SHS. They said Free SHS will lower the quality of educational standards."
"At the end of the 2023 WASSCE, nearly 70% of Ghanaian students who sat the exam passed, representing the highest pass rate since 2015," he said.
"There are those, who, instead of congratulating the students and their hardworking teachers for their remarkable success, are rather denigrating their efforts, by questioning the credibility of the score of the WAEC exams they wrote", he added.
Dr. Bawumia also reminded Ghanaians of the previous National Democratic Congress' government cancelling allowances for teacher trainees, nursing trainees and Arabic instructors, stressing it took the New Patriotic Party to restore these allowances.
In addition, he noted, the government has introduced free TVET education to enhance the Ghana's education system.
While slamming the negative attitude of "our opponent" to Free SHS and other educational initiatives, Dr. Bawumia concluded that “the future of the education of Ghanaian children will be safer in the hands of the NPP”.
"We, the NPP, have demonstrated that we can be trusted with the education of our children."
"Free SHS will not be safe in the hands of our main opponent. Let us not sacrifice the future of our children on the alter of people’s political ambitions", he emphasized.

As for you Bawumia, it is better we ignore or treat you as a non living entity! You talk as if, Ghanaians have no brains to think for themselves, we have no eyes to see for ourselves and worse of all, your pronouncements are very insulting to the intelligence of Ghanaians..... We will leave you to your conscience and to your ancestors to handle you......
The government should have done better with the current educational system if politics were taken out. I don’t see the rationale for setting up Free SHS secretariat at GES and put party members in charge rather than the technocrats. Now all the essential supplies and procurement are being handled by party members at all levels. Corruption under NPP is so pervasive and stinks. The same way they want to do with the district assembly so that every facet of life is controlled by the party.
Parents spend huge some of money to change schools Parents spend huge some of money to feed their wards because gov is not able to fulfill his feeding duty. Parents spend huge some of money to send their wards for vacation classes because gov has made term unstable and short . Parents spend huge some of money transporting their wards to school because gov gives vacation anyhow .
It is true that Gov has done well with the education but there are a lot of negatives . From the selection to exams .Whatever we are planting we will reap it in the near future .The results has already started .It is better we take politics out of education and bring others on board to make accurate system. Education minister should stop punishing parents in spending excessively .
***barred word*** saaa . an economist who doesn't talk about the economy in his campaign. Shame
As if he had any input into the students performance. Your job as head of Economic management team is what you should be talking about. How has the economy performed under your guidance? Now you want to associate yourself with success you never contributed to! The real motivation for the performance is that all of them want to get scholarship and move out of the country because they don't see hope in this country. At the NSMQ finals, all the finalists were asked about their ambitions and none of them wants to be a politician. Almost all of them were preparing for their SAT exam to get out of this country! The ***barred word*** and greedy and incompetent politicians in Ghana have destroyed the country and the brilliant, young scientific minds don't see their future in this country. This is really sad and pathetic. So incompetent bawumia should give as a break!
Ediot! Why are you not talking about the economy?
