Veteran actor David Dontoh has condemned the renaming of Ghana’s movie industry to “Gollywood”.
In an interview with host KOD on The Zone on Starr FM Wednesday, the TV personality expressed his disappointment at the move and called it alien.
“I don’t subscribe to the name ‘ Gollywood ‘ because I don’t know where it’s coming from. If it’s the ‘G’ in the name, it could be Guinea or Gambia”.
He also called it an attempt to recreate something that has already been in existence.
“I think we’re just trying to reinvent the wheel. The one who created Ghanaian film called it Ghana Film (film from Ghana). So I don’t know why we’re trying to follow people because everyone has a ‘Wood’ in their name” he said.
Mr. Dontoh called on local movie producers to make movies that Ghanaians will appreciate in order to build the industry.
“Show movies for our own people to appreciate and that’s when I can say we have a movie industry but until that is done, I can’t say we have an industry”.

Stereotypical!, i marvel at the thoughts of the African man sometimes, it was Hollywood because that is JUST the name of the area that's all! (like Makola is known for trade) and some Asians who always copy copied it and Africans are following blindly it makes us look funny, a laughing stock. What's the meaning of Nollywood and Gollywood, ***barred word***, your films will always be stereotypical because that is the foundation.
'N'in Nollywood could also mean Namibia, Niger lets be serious wai
