The Guardian reports that Portsmouth must find 22 million in short order if they wish to finish the current Premier League campaign.
The Fratton Park outfit are in deep financial strife and will face a winding-up petition unless they can demonstrate to the High Court that they can amass enough to keep them alive until season's end.
If they cannot satisfy their auditors when the case is heard on March 1, then Pompey will be made insolvent.
The Premier League are reportedly considering the club's plea to be allowed to sell players outside the transfer window in order to raise the necessary cash - a move that would prove highly controversial.
Furthermore, the figure of 22m is based upon the Hampshire side's aim of avoiding relegation, meaning they will in fact need as much as 26m to survive if they finish in the bottom three.
Portsmouth currently lie dead last in the top-flight standings, six points adrift of 19th-placed Hull City.
