SPEECH By ROTARY Accra Labone Prez
PDGs, PAGs, PP, Fellow Rotarians, and members of the press
On behalf of all members of the Rotary Club Of Accra Labone I would want to welcome you to this event.
The major service project we would undertake amongst others during our tenth anniversary would be a road safety campaign for the motoring public.
Road crashes are now the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 10-24 and cost the developing world billions of dollars every year, money that could be spent on schools and hospitals and economic development.
Each year, 1.2 million people are killed in road traffic crashes worldwide and most of these deaths happen in developing countries. Worst affected are vulnerable road users: children, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Today, road traffic injuries are already the number one killer of 10-24 year olds. Yet much of this tragic loss of life is preventable
Every year Ghana loses over $230 million to road accidents.
According to the National Road Safety Commission, there are 19 fatalities per 10,000 vehicles in Ghana, and though they are working to reduce the rate to a single digit by the year 2015, they would need the support of every Ghanaian.
As Rotarians and members of the Rotary Club of Accra Labone, it is our belief that we have a moral, civic and professional responsibility to work tirelessly towards reducing road traffic crashes & casualties.
The Make Roads Safe campaign we are embarking on as part of our 10th Anniversary is calling for:
1) Road safety education campaign for drivers, pedestrians and general public as well as eye screening exercise for drivers of commercial vehicles.
2) Road development projects should include a road safety element of at least 10%, to ensure that roads are designed safely and inclusively routing fast roads to avoid settlements where possible and providing quality access for vulnerable road users; pavements, cycle paths, separation from fast traffic.
3) Police enforcement we believe this should start with education and the education campaign would be the first line. We are partnering the MTTU in this endeavor.
I would take this opportunity to appeal the corporate world to support the Make Road Safe campaign that the Rotary Club of Accra Labone is initiating today.
It is my fervent hope that as Rotary Club Of Accra Labone celebrates our 10th Anniversary we would be inspired to reach within to serve humanity better than we ever had and contribute towards making our road safer.
