A 19-year-old man who attempted to sell a submachine gun rifle, formerly used by the military in their operations, has been arrested by the Kaneshie Police.
The suspect, Stephen Otoo, was apprehended on June 4, 2014, around 2:00am upon a tip off when he was about to offer the SMG rifle with number R12007 for sale behind the Kaneshie Police Station.
Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander ACP Timothy Yoosa Bonga told the media in a press briefing that the suspect travelled all the way from the Central Region to sell the rifle in Accra.
Upon hearing the news that Stephen had the rifle in his possession, police proceeded to the scene to lay in ambush for him.
Upon seeing the police, the suspect attempted to escape but he was given a hot chase and apprehended.
When searched, the rifle, together with two ammunitions which he concealed in a bag, was retrieved.
Upon interrogation, Stephen mentioned one Kwesi as the owner of the rifle.
He told the police that the two of them travelled to Accra to sell it, but according to the police, he had failed to help them locate the said Kwesi.
The suspect is in the custody of the Accra Regional Police awaiting trial.
