The Centre for African Democratic Affairs (CADA) has called on the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Charlotte Osei to take steps to redeem the waning reputation of the Commission.
They claimed such a move would help restore Ghanaians trust in the EC.
Any decision taken by the Commission should help redeem its sinking image towards restoration of the lost confidence in the Commission, it added.
The pro-democracy group made the suggestion in a petition they sent to the EC to back calls for the compilation of a new voters register.
Many, especially the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Let My Vote Count Alliance have put pressure on the EC to compile a new voters register for the nation over claims that the current one is bloated with names of minors and foreigners.
According to the CADA in the light of above, we would like to advise the Commission to consider replacing the existing voters roll for the next elections but as admitted earlier, the decision lies with the Commission.
What is common in the ongoing public discussions is that all stakeholders including the Commission and political parties agree that there are problems with the existing voters roll and must be addressed. The point of divergence is how to address the problems.
"Whilst some are advocating a complete replacement of the voters roll, others are of the opinion that the existing one must be cleaned. The fact is that whatever solution anybody proffers is a suggestion as the final decision remains the sole prerogative of the Commission, CADA added.
