Illegal mining, known in local parlance as galamsey, has over the years been the bane of the country, claiming lives and destroying several properties as well as water bodies.
The issue has since been unresolved with the influx of foreigners particularly Chinese engaging in this kind of mining deemed as illegal.
The country's laws frown on all mining operations that are not licensed and this is a reason Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' team set out to the mining sites to uncover the activities of these miners.
Reporting from the Atwima Kwanwoma district of the Ashanti Region, Peace FM's Sampson Nyamekye disclosed that due to the mining operations at the vicinity, all their water bodies and lands have been destroyed.
According to him, the residents have been complaining bitterly to the authorities but to no avail, hence encouraging the mining operators to continue with their illegal activities.
He further noted that the miners' activities in the district infuriated the residents to the extent that they staged a demonstration against the miners but the demonstrators were arrested and have been remanded by the Police for no apparent reason.
Below are images showing the state of the water bodies and properties at the district:

Let tax the miners(both large, small & local galamseys)to pay for this job
We have lost our minds, and we shall lose our souls. What does it profit us to win all the gold and lose our souls?
Does the area has an MP and voted for the MP?
Water is life and the rampant destruction of our water bodies in the name of illegal mining must cease before it becomes too late. What are the laws saying and whose responsibility is it that the laws are enforced without fear or favour? The District Assemblies, Police, Environmental Protection Agency, opinion leaders and our chiefs should combine efforts to curb the menace. Our very livelihood is being threatened.
