Host of Peace FM's Flagship programme "Kokrokoo", Kwami Sefa Kayi, appears sickened by the filth that has swallowed up the Capital city, Accra and other parts of the nation and the nonchalant attitude Ghanaians have towards ensuring good environmental sanitation.
He wondered how Ghana, after achieving 61 years of independence, still battles with sanitation problems.
In the last 20 years, waste management has become a key part of campaign promises of political parties, as the city authorities struggle to cope with the waste generated by residents daily.
Certain parts of Accra, the capital for instance, is the scene of littered refuse, raw sewage sipping through choked drains and open defecation.
Piles of refuse have also engulfed some markets, major highways and several communities in the city.
Even in so-called affluent and well planned areas, the insanitary conditions and heaps of garbage that one is confronted with, is an eye-sore.
It was therefore not surprising when the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Andrew Barnes, recently asked Ghanaian authorities to up their game to meet President Akufo-Addo’s promise to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by 2020.
The President, addressing chiefs and people of Jamestown in April last year, pledged his commitment to make Accra the cleanest cities in Africa by the end of his tenure.
But now, that commitment seems to be a fluke.
Addressing the issue on his platform on Monday, Kwami Sefa Kayi, affectionately called Chairman General, quizzed "the filth in Accra is shocking. So, will we look on like this?”
Whiles enjoing Ghanaians to cultivate habits that prevents littering the environment, the reigning GJA Journalist of the year called for punitive measures to be instituted against offenders to deter prospective ones from littering around.

Sweden is importing waste from other countries to feed their industrialization agenda yet we are being choked and killed by waste and filth! What an irony! And all you hear every day in this country are npp and ndc throwing jabs at each other. Nothing progressive being discussed. We have reduced this country to politics between ndc and npp much to the neglect of everything important!
DIGITIZE THE CLEAN UP. CREATE JOBS. BUILD FACTORIES TO PRODUCE BROOMS. USE BAMBOO AND PALM TREES. CREATE JOBS. GIVE CONTRACTS TO THE YOUTH CLEAN THE COUNTRY. CREATE 10,000,000 JOBS. TAX THE COMPANIES WHO PRODUCE THE FILTH. USE THE MONEY TO PAY THE YOUTH. CREATE EMPLOYMENT.
The Peace FM building is as dirty as Accra , with improper parking space and electrical cable all over. Built in a very congested area with no proper environmental plans like Nima. No proper lawns, built haphazardly just like the building being put up at mile 7 I believe that is the Attitude of all Ghanaians including you and your media house. Start changing your attitude before you start addressing issues of such nature.
Massa; the classic cocktail of the media ;politicians and the church are the major contributors of such filth in Accra ; just examine these three key elements society headed by poor leadership in the man of Nana Addo ; the media have aware of the filthy situation in Ghana for years ; do they discuss it on the radio or TV programmes -NO WAY!!! because they get nothing out of it ; politicians come from these dirty places -are they not aware of such piles of rubbish in their back yards; the church why do not the pastors preach the relevance of cleaning their homes and the streets but rather all they do is collect monies from their congregation for investment ; then you this hypocrite Mensah -Otabil attempting to see wrong in the media and castigate them whilst he does not say anything about the evil things going on in the church ; to me leadeship is the key ; Nana Addo leave a stone through near NIma but go see the filth in the gutter passing near Nana Addos house; the truth is that it all depends on political will and leadership.
It is not only Accra, the whole nation is dirty. It is time Ghanaians change their attitude about their environment. It is normal for Ghanaian to just throw garbage anywhere without thinking about the mess it will create. One thing that needs to be change is about the bottle water they put in another plastic bag. What do you need that plastic bag for just a small bottle water? That alone creates a lot mess.
Bola is swallowing Accra, What is Nana Addo doing? How will will it cost to provide dustbins Around Accra? How much will it cost to provide sweepers across Accra? How much will it cost to cover all gutters in Accra? Yet we spend $72 million on software, and now one has been punished? What a Country!
Chairman General don't worry your heart heart for no one will listen and change the atitude bcos Ghanaians are living in a ssshhhiiittthole period
Accra is not a dirty city. Ghanaian living in Accra are very dirty people. Open deification in the 21st century? Look at the beaches in Accra, very dirt. The president and all leaders in Ghana should be ashamed of them selves. Leaders of fitly people. Tweakai. All they know it 4x4 and bullet proof cars, yet they can provide common dustbins for the city of Accra. What a waist of resources.
Rowanda is even far better than Ghana after so many years of civil war. Ghana should wake up our leaders talk too much with no results.
What is needed now are recycling plants to put these garbage into good use. This will even generate lots and lots of employments. With the recycling plants in place, dustbins can be put in all public places, with specific garbages that should be put in them, with proper monitoring because humans can be naughty. After collection, it is transported for recycling. And companies who producing these bottled products, can even take up this. Ghana wake up.This isnt about politics.
