The new President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, has said he will introduce free primary and secondary education for all children from September.
He told the opening session of parliament in Freetown that the education budget would be almost doubled.
President Bio said the money would come in part from spending cuts in other areas - and he would also seek funding from international donors.
Sierra Leone is one of the world's poorest countries, and more than half the population cannot read or write.

PREZ.NANA ADDO HAS PAVE THE WAY AND MANY AFRICAN NATIONS WILL FOLLOW SOON. NDC MUST BE DISSOLVE BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO CLUE.
Well done Nana Akufo-Addo. You are indeed a visionary leader. You have shown the way with FREE SHS and now the rest of Africa will follow. God richly bless you.
NDC can't read and if they read they can't understand. This Ghana Beyond Aid policy has been explained a million times but they still can't understand.

GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! AFRICA
Functional literacy.
@NANA iam sorry for your family,it seem you don't understand about gorven, you just write and go away, you are funny,@ DUNCAN thanks for your answer to NANA.
@Nana.I'm sorry that some of you people simply don't understand the concept of 'Ghana Beyond Aid'Simply put it means we should minimise corruption to its barest minimum, add value to our exports and work our ***barred word*** off so we do not have to seek help from the West to support our programmes and our budget.. Is this too difficult to understand?or is it that many have sawdust where their brains are supposed to be?At least for that gentleman to see that education is key to his people's well being is good for starters. It is not even fair to refer to Sierra Leone as one of the poorest countries on earth. They have lots of resources .What they need is an honest dedicated leadership.
Same story, that he will seek funding from international donors. So the day international donors says they can't fund it means the so called free education will collapse? why can't our leaders think a bit? Nana is there saying Africa beyond aid whiles turning around to beg with pressure of gays on him then this new one in Sierra Leon is talking about international donors to fund free education? confusional in the minds of our leaders. Too bad.
Wow, Mr President, this is the way to go. God bless you for this bold initiative. Sierra - Leone will be a much better country in the next decade due to this decision you have taken. Kudos for this initiative.
