Government has added representatives of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Teachers and Educational Union of Ghana (TEWU) to the interim council of KNUST following the declaration of strike by lecturers at the university.
Various bodies in KNUST including UTAG declared an indefinite strike action after a seven-member committee chaired by Nana Effah Appenteng, the Paramount Chief of Bompata Traditional Area, was appointed to over see the day to day management of the university after the dissolution of the previous one.
According to these bodies the dissolution of the governing council by government was illegal and an affront on the university's autonomy.
“They didn’t even bother. They totally ignored us,” UTAG-KNUST President, Professor Eric Fokuo told journalists Friday after a meeting which led to the declaration of a strike action.
Government has yielded to pressure and reviewed the membership of the interim committee to include a representative each from UTAG and TEWU; bringing the number to nine members.

The so called UTAG and TEWU when the student was treating unfairly where were they? hypocrite and dishonesty is killing our nation.Again they use to say the University is autonomous, they wont allow the government to interfere in their matters but they stand accusing the government of not paying them their research and book allowance.Hypocrite at it best.

Too late!!! Govt. should climb down the high horse and restore the dissolved KNUST Council. The Chancellor (Otumfuo) is best placed to bring the parties together and resolve issues at KNUST. Govt. should not listen to party officials to make bad decisions. It is rather the Ministry of Education that needs overhaul at the top for advising the dissolution of the University Council. Please do not let our leader look bad.
