The Executive Director of Bureau of Public Safety, Nana Yaw Akwada says directives by the Interior Minister to arm all Police officers on traffic duty “is not the right thing to do”.
According to him, the move is laudable but the officers must go through some “serious training” – adding that Police officers on traffic duty don’t have “good records with the gun” whiles on duty.
Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’, Nana Yaw Akwada called on the Police Council to immediately halt the implementation of a directive by the Interior Minister.
He explained that, the move will rather worsen the already bad relationship between the public and the police.

A GOOD ONE THERE. I THOUGHT AS MUCH THAT THIS POLITICAL PEOPLE SPEAK AT THE SPELL OF THE MOMENT AND JUST GO AWAY. I REMEMBER VIVIDLY WHEN THE GAS EFERNO HAPPENED AT MEDINA AREA IN ACCRA THIS SAME MINISTER AND THE VICE PRESIDENT WERE THERE AND SPOKE TOUGH. WHEN THE POLICE OFFICER WAS SHOT AND KILLED AT TOMIC KWABENNYA THIS SAME PERSONS WERE THERE TALKING BIG. WHY THE VICE PRESIDENT IS ALWAYS AT SUCH DISASTER AREAS TALKING TOUGH AND NOTHING HAPPENS BEATS MY IMAGINATION. NOW THERE THEY COME TO KASOA AND KUMASI TALKING AGAIN AND PROMISING. IS IT BY FORCE TO SPEAK. HOW CAN YOU GIVE GUNS TO POLICE MEN IN TRAFFIC? SOME OF THEM ARE QUICK TEMPERED THEY WILL START KILLING DRIVERS AND SAY ITS SELF DEFENCE. SONE MAY BE GIVEN BUT NOT AS BLANKET AS THEY ARE SAYING. LOOK AT HOW THEY SAID IT AS IF IT MUST START THAT DAY OR TODAY. I SKED ONE MOTOR TRAFFIC POLICEMAN AND JOKENLY ASKED WHERE IS HIS GUN AND BULLET PROOOF VERSE HE LUGHED INTO A WIATING CAR. LETS BE CALM AND NOT SPEAK AT THE SPELL OF THE MOMENT.
