A former deputy Minister for Power, John Abdulai Jinapor, says the government is not being factual with the exact amount it owes the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and how much has been paid.
He claims to have the right figures of the actual debt government owes and will make it public in due time.
“What they [Government] are doing is propaganda. What they are saying is not true and they know it. I am working on a statement and will soon come out with facts and figures,” he said in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’.
Gov’t Clears GHS2bn ECG Debt
Government, on Tuesday, said it has cleared over GHS2 billion debt owed ECG.
“In 2016, when the NDC left power, the total amount owed the ECG was GHS2.63 billion. The NPP, on the assumption of office, ensured it was current on all the bills incurred from 2017 to date," Energy Minister John Peter Amewu who revealed this also noted: "President Akufo-Addo has paid 2 billion annually to cover bills to ECG".
“All bills have been paid to ECG with a credit of 500 million,” Mr. Amewu added.
The Energy Minister disclosed this at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, 19th May 2020.
No, Government Is Owing GHS5 billion
John Abdulai Jinapor, however, noted that, “Government is rather owing GHS5 billion. I will make this and other things clear in my statement”

You are not even ashamed to have left such a huge debt at ECG, you did same with the National Health Insurance and a host of others. This was at a time when you had froven public sector employment, cancelled allowances for trainee nurses and teachers was not paying capitation grant to the schools. Even if the government has paid just 1000 cedis of your debt they have done well. You know very well they have cleared the debt but just because of politics you will come to lie as if the rest of us are ***barred word***. Its not you i blame the Nonsensical party is who i blame. You are educated and yet....... Yo disgrace we the Northerners wgen you do these things.
These MPs from the north have no shame at all. They peddled falsehood about govt sending forged data to the IMF. After the IMF rep debunked their claims on radio, they found no reason to even apologise but rather they have switched to another claim. Such are the things we address as honourable. Such a disgrace!
I just don't get it,is it good if government has paid this debt or it's bad, what is NDC 's problem if the debt is paid or its because they left the debt and NPP is paying,.Yesterday on top story on joyfm John Jinapor disputed the 2.4 or so the minister stated but this evening on GTv news Mutawakilu the NDC's spokesman on energy confirmed that figure so the NDC I don't know their problem it seems they just oppose anything coming from government, why don't they allow ECG to speak for themselves.
