Former President John Dramani Mahama wants the government to intervene to resolve the impasse between the military and residents of Ashaiman before the situation escalates.
Military personnel besieged Ashaiman on Tuesday dawn following the killing of a member of the Ghana Armed Forces Band, Sherif Imoro, 22.
He was in Accra for a military course and in the last three weeks, had been visiting his parents in their home at Ashaiman every Friday, multiple media sources said.
It was during one of his visits that he was reportedly confronted by a gang that killed him.
Reacting to the development on Facebook on Wednesday (8th March), John Mahama condemned the killing of the soldier, adding that the government must compensate all affected persons.
“I am deeply saddened by the death of one of our soldiers, at such a young age, in Ashaiman.
“Lordina and I extend our deepest condolences to his bereaved and grieving family, and the officers and men of the Ghana Armed Forces.
“As your former Commander in Chief, I do appreciate how such unexpected deaths affect the Force.
“However, I encourage you to exercise restraint and allow due process to investigate, apprehend, prosecute and punish the perpetrator(s) of the dastardly act,” Mahama wrote on Facebook.
Adding that, "I pray we find peace and harmony in our dear country, as the government and state institutions immediately step in to address this potentially inflammatory development between Ashaiman and the Ghana Armed Forces; including providing commensurate compensation for all persons affected.”

Why is NDC interested in compensation for these criminals instead on the innocent soldier who was killed.
the current government must be having challenges but This mahama man who have recently just told the country all he needs ia a job and that he has spent the ex gratia and cannot pay back. .....you should be scared. the ***barred word***? you can imagine his very last term and whether he even cares about anyone. someone personally involved in taking cuts and bribery ? no way I am so afraid for you Ghana be ware of snake in the grass
It is very disheartening and annoying to be seeing such faces in the media once again after getting rid of it.
Use some of your Ex-Gratia to compensate the victims of the brutaity
I am surprised the MP was spared the military swoop. He carried the indiscipline of the area to parliament to drag the speaker's chair.
Mr former president we do not have short memory as you think. Teachers who worked for three years under your watch were paid for only three months. You saw nothing wrong with it. Do'nt they deserve good compensation? The more you talk, the more you commit yourself. We are waiting for your programs and policies and not I will review this, I will scrap that. I am urging his handlers and aides to take the flask from him, it is full of Tennessee whisky.
This Mahama koraa why? You couldn't ask for compensation for the innocent soldier but you are asking for compensation for thugs in Ashiaman who have made that place a no-go area. The soldiers should go there every week to put sense in their empty heads. Mahama don't waste your time with these loose talks.
Panyin wei paa ne haw ne sen?
Panyin wei paa be haw be sen?
A soldier is killed and not bothered about the bereaved family, but rather embarrassing yourself calling for compensation. If this is how your big head think, then all suspects who end up been discharged must be compensated
