The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) is to intensify monitoring of the services of utility service companies from January 2010 to ensure quality service to consumers of electricity and water. According to the PURC, it will not hesitate from next year to impose penalties or sanctions on utility service companies which will fail to meet required standards.

Mr. Stephen Adu the Executive Director of the PURC gave the assurance at a press briefing in Accra today. He acknowledged that the supply of electricity in various parts of the country this year has been affected by some difficulties faced by the service providers.

He said information flow from the utility companies to the PURC about difficulties that affect the supply of such utilities has not been the best this year and emphasized the need for improved communication between the utility companies and the PURC.

The Public Relations Manager of the PURC, Nana Yaa Jantuah, said the PURC is not a toothless bull dog as some people might perceive it. She said lack of adequate funding affects its operations but hoped government will provide the commission enough resources next year to enable it function effectively.
