The National Peace Council (NPC) has expressed dissatisfaction at recent post-elections developments that have seen the two major political parties call results for their presidential candidates. The Council wants the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in particular to retract its 54.91 per cent victory claim for its flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The main opposition party, in a seeming reaction to an earlier statement released by the camp of John Dramani Mahama, claimed Nana Akufo-Addo is in a commanding lead with 80 per cent of votes collated by them so far. But speaking on TV3 on Thursday dawn, National President of NPC Reverend Professor Emmanuel Kwaku Asante said what the two parties have done “is a recipe for concern”. The immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana was categorical in pointing out that it is only the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) that is constitutionally mandated to declare poll results. “It is premature for any party to declare results,” he emphasized, adding that a caveat should have been even given that the results were provisional.
“I would have thought that [NPP] will come back to say that what [they] have said are provisional results.” He said the two parties should not mar an election that has been conducted generally peacefully. “I am pleading for calm in this nation. What has happened is very unfortunate,” he said.
He said no individual or group should act in a manner that will jeopardize the peace of the nation. “Let us not jeopardise the peaceful elections that we have had. Let us not be provoked to do anything that will undermine the peace.” He advised all to be circumspect in any pronouncement in this period and try to help maintain the peace the country has enjoyed over the past years.

IN 2008 ELECTION WHEN THE RESULTS WERE NOT YET DECLARED BUT NDC BELIEVED THEY WERE LEADING IN THE ELECTIONS WE ALL SAW WHAT THE NDC DID IN THE STREET OF ACCRA AND AND EC OFFICE AND OTHER PLACES, ASIEDU NKETIA AND SOME NDC SUPPORTERS GOT TO THE STREET IN A READY FOR BATTLE OUTFITS. WE HAVE TO COMMEND NPP FOR THE CONDITION IN GHANA NOW, STILL KEEPING THE NATION CALM AND WAITING IN CONFIDENCE. NPP HAVE SHOWN SO MUCH MATURITY AND WISDOM. THEY HAVE PUT DOWN THE FIGURES THEY HAVE GATHERED AND SHOW IT TO THE WHOLE WORLD TO BACK THEIR CLAIM THAT THEY ARE WINNING THE ELECTIONS. NDC HAS MADE MANY OF THAT CLAIMS BY MAHAMA, ASIEDU NKETIA, OFOSU AMPOFU AND KOKU ANYIDOHO WITHIN THE TWO DAYS WITHOUT TELLING US HOW THEY ARRIVED AT THAT CONCLUSION. THEY HAVE MADE CLAIMS THEY COULD NOT SUBSTANTIATE, YET THEY WANT US TO BELIEVE IN THEM . WHAT WAS THE POINT FOR NDC TO MAKE THAT STATEMENTS IN SEVERAL NEWS CONFERENCES WHICH THEY STRONGLY STATED THAT THEY ARE WINNING AND THEY ARE IN COMFORTABLE LEAD? IS IT NOT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO CONVINCE THE PUBLIC OF THEIR VICTORY? THEN IN ADDITION KOKU ANYIDOHO CAME TO THREAT THAT IF ANY NPP GETS TO THE STREET HE WOULD ORGANIZED NDC TO MEET AND ATTACK THEM. YES HE IS KNOWN FOR THAT. THEY ORGANIZED KEEP FIT TO ATTACK NANA ADDO IN HIS HOUSE SO IT IS EASY TO ATTACK NPP CELEBRANTS IN THE STREET. THIS WAS UNCALLED FOR. IT SHOW OF HIM AND THE PARTY HE SPEAKS FOR AS VIOLENT AND BAD LOSERS. SO EVEN NOW IF THE PRESIDENTIAL RESULT IS NOT YET CONCLUDED PEOPLE CANNOT CELEBRATE PARLIAMENTARY RESULTS WHICH ARE DECLARED. ALL SHALL COME TO PASS KOKU, A TIN GOD IN GHANA. I AM HAPPY NPP ARE MATURED AND HAS NOTICED THE DIABOLIC INTENTION OF KOKU ANYIDOHO TO CHALLENGE AND PROVOKE THEM TO STREETS FIGHTS AND VIOLENCE TO TARNISH THE NPP VICTORY. I APPEAL TO ALL NPP ABD ALL WELL MEANING GHANAIANS TO REMAIN CALM AND NOT TO GIVE IN TO ANY SUCH ***barred word*** PROVOCATIONS. THE DIE IS ALREADY CAST. THE RESULT SHALL BE DECLARED AND A PRESIDENT WILL BE SWORN IN. NOBODY SHOULD MIND THE TREATS AND PROVOCATIONS OF KOKU ANYIDOHO. WE MUST LEAVE HIM TO HISTORY AND NATURE TO DETERMINE HIS FATE. NPP AND GHANAIANS SHOULD CONTINUE TO SHOW MATURITY AND REMAIN CALM. GOD WILL HELP YOU TO DEFEAT THE NOCTURNAL DIABOLIC CREATURES.
A ***barred word*** BODY THAT SHOULD BE SCRAPPED IMMEDIATELY. THEY ARE JUST WASTING OUR MONEY AND RESOURCES.
sometimes it is worrisome to hear people of high educational background and hold high position to say things they say. if the EC is the only that collate results why does it give out the so called pink sheet to the parties?
Please, keep quiet did you suffered with the majority of Ghanaians? You are going home with Mahama to pave the way for Rev.Owusu Bempa.
I wonder ooo, are u living in Ghana and even if ure not cant u read or see wats going on with the trend of events. Are u blind to the fact that NPP is leading the polls and thus this calls for celebration despite the fact that our incompetent and shameful EC cant be bold to say anything feasible to the cherish citizens of Ghana. NANA b3ba wate...
Have you forgotten that it was the President who actually asked his personal secretary (that nameless lady) to issue a statement that the NDC is winning?
By the rulings in the court last election, elections are won at the polling stations, so if we have voted, counted, and results were declared at the polling stations, should contestants sit, fold their arms and watch them come up with something else as it happened last elections? Peace Council, remember you called Nana to accept defeat which he painfully accepted. Do you want him to do that this time too? Please God is watching. What is the difference between two people, one saying he is having a comfortable lead and the other saying per the results from the polling stations i am leading by this much?
This Peace Council is so biased in favour of the NDC. They will be better called Chaos Council.
Did the peace council hear or read the press release by Joyce Bawa Mongtari this midnight.? That was long before NPP called d results
I think they are jubiliating base on the parliamentary results they have witnessed. The journey is still the Lords
