Former Deputy Finance Minister Ato Forson has condemned the abolishment of import duties on spare parts, claiming the move will soon make the country a dumping ground for over-aged vehicles and parts.
According to him, the National Democratic Congress government did not introduce such taxes to only generate revenue but also check the importation of over-aged vehicles into the country. He claimed that about 70 to 80 per cent of the spare parts sold at the major hub of used spare parts in the country, Abbosey Okai in Accra, are over-aged vehicle parts. “This initiative by the government therefore would rather exacerbate its importation,” he said on Onua FM while commenting on the 2017 budget presented to parliament by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Attah on Thursday. He described the entire budge as 419 with the sole purpose of deceiving the Ghanaian people.

Ato did you get one of the cars from the Presidency?? Just wondering.
Look at this ***barred word***.The gud people of Ghana appreciate what the government has done. Whether u like it or not, we are happy and proud of Nana's government. ***barred word*** man
Common sense tells me this will not happen Ato Forson. Maybe you should start doing that and see if it makes economic and business sense to do that. You end up loosing because no one will buy your products when consumers realize that your products are inferior or over-aged and therefore do not last. Ghanaians are better off than this whopped thinking. Togo that have import free duty ports has become a dumping ground for all manner of imported goods, that is what Ato Forson want us to believe, yet Ghanaians go there to buy and sell such goods on the Ghanaian markets and make profits. So simply put, you have no point in your pessimists assessment.
Ghanaians managed to survive for 8 years after ru*bb*ish like Ato Forson and his likes were dumped on us. Surviving dumping of spare parts will thus be very easy.
This is dangerous for the people of Ghana and it's transportation sector.Various private owned cars and beyond. Our lives are in danger. fake spare parts..refurbish into the country ... a dumping sites hub..whilst we cannot even attend to refuse ....around the country
NDC was using these taxes on spare parts to generate income and steal the money...... These importers are business people and will only bring parts that will sell. If there is no demand for the parts they will not bring them. I will say it again here... I can see the NDC with this sense11ess arguments remaining in opposition for a very very long time.
Ato, we have passed the stage of mere conjecturing, we need figures to back statement. To what extent did your tax on spare parts reduce importation of spare parts. To what extent did you evaluate your own policy, I am afraid yours was just to get more money into the kitty, but any good tax administrator will tell you that, taxes should never be made to look like punishment, when that is done people shy away from it and find loop holes to evade it. I am sorry, please come again with fact and figures then we can begin to have a very good constructive argument devoid of conjecturing and mere statement that are weightless. Be a responsible opposition and give us facts and figures please. These cheap street economics will not help anyway. If you have nothing to say, when the radio stations call you be responsible and honourable enough to tell them you are now digesting the content of the budget after which you will come out with a better response that will enrich the discussion, that we will all appreciate your worth and begin to take you serious. I am afraid now you are fast losing ground and slipping too fast into total ....................
Ebei, Mr Forson!! Na waa for you oo!! This one na skin pain oo
Spare parts from abossey okai is nothing good to write home about.......fake ..over used...refurbished from Nigeria....scrapped engine parts assembled right here in Ghana and called home used engine.....Government should partner and help bring a vehicle assembly plant here......not encouraging used spare parts and accident cards......Kenya has assembly plant from Volkswagen......Uganda is getting one soon......Ghana should follow and serve sub Sahara Africa......what is home used car and spare part.....very backward
