Five excavators, two Toyota pick-ups, a box of live ammunition, a pump action gun, two locally manufactured guns and a silver pan containing gold dust were impounded by the police during the arrest which took place last Saturday.
The arrest of the miners followed an operation conducted by the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) of the Eastern Regional Police Command to flush out illegal miners from the region.
Briefing
Briefing the Daily Graphic in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr George Alex Mensah, said the suspects, who are currently in police custody, would be put before court, pending further investigations into their activities.
DCOP Mensah, who expressed deep concern over the harm illegal mining was causing to the environment in the region, called on all stakeholders to get involved in the fight against the menace to save the environment and the country.

We need to jail them because if you even have your chinese visa expired one day in their country you would smell peper. Look at chinese also talking rubbissh in our country. I would not be annoyed if america or uk or germany should cheat us but not this crimal chinese who would do any thing for what they want. We now need to stop them from retailing business also as that must be only for Ghanaians. Let stand for our right.
I did not vote for NADAA but respect where its due. He is showing leadership and strength, something we have been missing for a while. I'm gradually beginning to appreciate the man. I just hope this is not a nine day wonder, he has the support and goodwill of the masses and this fight must be sustained to the end. Posterity will judge him favorably because this is not just a fight for our sustenance, its a fight for our future generations. JM i hope you are watching and learning, this is why leaders are voted into office, to serve the interest of his people, i love you but you failed and please do our party a big favor and don't come back.
It's time the authorities deport Chinese illegal gold miners from our soil or else we will regret.
