The Accra Metropolitan Assembly is demolishing unauthorized structures and settlements around the Kwame Nkrumah interchange at Circle in Accra.
The numerous hawkers on the pavement are also being asked to vacate the place immediately.
The exercise is reportedly at the behest of the Accra Mayor Mohammed Adjei Sowah.
The interchange which was outdoored less than a year ago has been invaded by hawkers and illegal settlers, who are threatening to vote against the President if he does not stop the demolition .
According to them, though they were given three weeks notice, the AMA failed to offer an alternative place for them to sell their wares.
According to a Starr News’ Naa Dedei Tettey who is at the scene, the traders are burning tyres and agitating as the AMA officials embark on the exercise.
But the Director of Operations at the AMA , Mohammed Naziru in a rebuttal justified the AMA’s move, saying the traders’ concerns are baseless since they were given prior notice. Mr. Naziru further explained that the move is in fulfillment of President Nana Addo’s commitment to rid the country of filth.
“The AMA taskforce is not happy about this development. That is why we came to speak to them to find another place. Nana Addo’s priority is to make Accra clean and that is why we are embarking on this exercise.”

give them alternative place indeed. when everybody just gets up to do whatever they like. they just get up to sell anywhere. our ceremonial streets have now become market places. hope the mayor will continue and this will not be a nine day wonder. if because of the demolition they will not vote, they shouldn't vote. angels will come vote again.
The AMA should leave the name of the president out this and do their job as the managers of the city. So if the president has not commented on riding the city of filth, you ***barred word*** will be sitting on your ***barred word*** and do nithing?
