The Finance Ministry has released an amount of GHS106,697,628.80 to the Registrar of Scholarships for payment of feeding grants for second cycle schools in the northern regions.
It says the payment is in respect of the third term feeding grant for 137,300 students for the 2015-2016 academic year, and also for 140,264 students for the first term of 2016/2017 academic year.
An amount of GHS184,851,616.60 has been outstanding since the beginning of 2017 which is supposed to be scholarship payments for the third term of 2015/2016, the first term of 2016/2017 and the expected payment for the second term of 2016/2017, the Ministry said.
The Ministry is processing the remaining claims for the second and third terms of the 2016/2017 academic year.
Senior high schools (SHS) in the Upper East, Upper West and the Northern Regions on Tuesday, announced their decision to delay reopening indefinitely, due to lack of funds to pay their suppliers.
The three regions together have a total of 72 Senior High Schools that are managed by the Ghana Education Service.
The Heads said government’s failure to reimburse the outstanding feeding grants for four academic calendars, necessitated the action because they were hugely indebted to their suppliers.
The schools were scheduled to reopen on May 16, but the school heads say they are not in the position to feed the students if the feeding grants are not released.

I hope Ghanaians will appreciate the efforts of the new administration. Payments of this kind can build six to even 12 unit blocks. Nana is on the right path. I hope this administration can service these debt and do a bit in other sectors because the debts are are too gargantuan.
I trust the current major opposition party will ponder over this feat and readjust the way it is doing politics in the country. Ghana is now serious and requires seriousness in even utterances and criticisms. God bless Ghana. We cannot and will not entertain the unworthy old ways anymore.
Where are they those ndc rented commentators who come to insult everyone who loves Ghana and is patriotic to her? The debts you wickedly left Ghanaians are being paid, from 2015-2016-2017 January which was the beginning of the first term in 2017 are being paid. Come here to tell us you didn't leave nothing to be paid so you are a formidable party. A party riddled with debts have mouths to talk loud. Ndc has left Ghana with so much debts including their own party owing MMT almost GHS2million with only GHS400,000 paid ( wofa nono )to ontua ka) a party which was left with money and oil with most contracts paid and with just GHS9 billion debt left in 2009 has left Ghana GHS120 billion in debts. Somebody tell ndc that governance is not about create, loot and share, loud mouth and insults for wisdom is silence. Ghana will succeed to benefit all ndc footsoldiers who were neglected by their own greedy and selfish people, whose business in opposition is to still deal with unnecessary press conferences of Otiko and Bugri Naabu eeii! What has 2 elephants fighting got to do with a hungry Ghanaian?hahahaha! Ndc got time for this rub*ish and called those John mahama called lazy media to listen to this kpokpogbligbli attack depression from a humiliating defeat.I enjoy Ghana's interesting opposition.
