A pastor has risen up against the annual ban on drumming and noise making by the Ga Traditional Council, describing it as “lawlessness” and a breach of Christians’ freedom to worship.
According to Reverend Samuel Korankye-Gary who is the General Overseer of the Glory Temple Charismatic Ministry, the observance of the ban by Christians would mean “indirectly paying homage to the gods or worshiping to idols which is against our faith and the teachings of Christ”.
He and his church have accordingly petitioned the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kofi Dzamesi, to abolish the ban which is observed ahead Homowo Festival by the Ga people in Accra.
This year’s ban, which started Monday, May 8, will end June 8, 2017. During the period residents within the metropolis are required to bring their noise making to the brearest minimum failure.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has already set up a taskforce in place to ensure strict adherence to the one month ban, and anyone who flout is would be made to face sanctions. But pastor in his petition says “it does not auger well and does not make sense for Christians to be forced observe a festival which they don’t believe or is contrary to their faith”.
Rev. Korankye-Gary held that since Christians do not have the power to force traditionalists to share in the Christian faith, the traditionalists cannot also compel Christians to observe the ban in worship of their gods.
He said the practices which has gone on for far too long has to be stopped, and consequently pleaded with the Chieftaincy Ministry to abolish same “since it is against the freedom of Christians in Accra”.
“We plead with you and your ministry to act swiftly to avert any act of religious conflict in the country because the church is not going to tolerate that imposition of unacceptable faith on us any longer,” he stated in the petition which is copied to the Chief Justice, the Speaker of Parliament and the Ghana Bar Association.

when some one died in kumasi, there was a ban on funerals, when she was going to be buried, there was a "curfew" and no body said anything. come to Accra and they tell us how to live on our own land. they are the same people who will drink alcoholic beverages and turn round to say render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto to God what is God's. when there is so much noise, not only from the churches, but practically every where, no body says anything. Akan Pastors, if you think you can not abide by just a month of quiet, go back to your hometowns and build your churches there. it is not the noise that will bring people or money into your coffers. preaching the undiluted word of God will bring all this. noise, noise, noise everywhere. at least once a year let Ga land enjoy some quiet. Shalom
It's against our faith as Christians and is high time we talk about this funny tradition. If these gods have power, why don't they speak for themselves or perhaps strike on those who don't observe this ban on noise making but rather some lawless people who don't have anything better to do. Go round seeking to collect money from churches and places who forget the ban. Last year I was in a church in Lapas when these people enter to mess up our service and amps. After receiving an amount, they said it was okay to even maximise the volume. What about the train and car-horn, The noise of the generators and power-plants during light out. Are these gods okay with this noise but can't stand the sound of a church instruments or the worship and praises? The Christian Council and the Clergy are mute on this issue. Who Can Stand For God?
The pastor has made his point and it is for us to also make our points either in support or against and stop this insult, since we are all mature people. He may be right and so could you. After all freedom of worship is enshrined in the Constitution of Ghana. I rest my case.
all these outmoded unproductive traditional practices must be scrapped.
Thank you very much my brother Nii, sometimes its gets soo irritating when some of these ***barred word*** pastors come public to exhibit their degree of ignorance. Please can someone go educate this pastor man on whats Custom & Tradition and whats Religion. "THIS" is ours too, its our custom , its our tradition, am?..can somebody please tell him he isnt the only christian or son of God on this land and that he should learn to respect other people's space?.. anyway he has all the right to relocate to the peripheral of this Ga land(to enjoy his noise making at this short period) but he DARE NOT try to disrespect this simple order.... may be he should go study his bible better... Ga shikpon Gam3i an) ni... ENOUGH OF HIS IMPUDENCE
This 1diot who calls himself a pastor should go and tell the Ashantis the same when they place such bans.
