A 29-year old Physician Assistant at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital was on Tuesday remanded into Police custody by the Cape Coast Magistrate's Court for allegedly raping a 20-year old student nurse who was doing her clinical at the hospital.
The accused, Edward Afful’s plea was not taken and would re-appear in Court on Tuesday August 28, 2018.
Detective Inspector John Asare Bediako told the Court that the victim together with some colleagues were at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital on a three-week clinical affiliation programme expected to end on Saturday, August 18, 2018, and was assigned to the Foster Ward where Afful worked.
Prosecution told the Court that Afful had been helping the student nurse with her work and they became friends, leading to him inviting her on a number of occasions to his bungalow to assess her presentations.
Detective Inspector Bediako said on Sunday August 5, 2018 at about 1700hours, Afful invited the victim to his room where she downloaded a movie on her laptop and he expressed interest to watch that movie, which according to him was trending on the internet.
While they were watching the movie together, Afful took advantage, struggled, tore her panties and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her without her consent, despite her plea to him that she was a virgin and his finger nails scratched her body, leaving many marks on her.
He said on Monday August 6, 2018, the student nurse reported the incident to the Elmina Police Station and the case was referred to the DOVVSU office in Cape Coast and Afful was arrested.
In his caution statement, Afful told the Police that the victim consented to the act but became worried having lost her virginity against her church rules and that of her parents.

THE GHANA PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT ASSOCIATION. (G.P.A.A) RE: PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT REMANDED FOR ALLEGEDLY RAPING A STUDENT NURSE AT ANKAFUL. FOR REJOINDER AND IMMEDIATE RELEASE. The Central Regional and National leadership of GHANA PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS ASSOCIATION’s attention has been drawn to a publication by the Daily Graphic on 15th August, 2018, on the above subject matter. We wish to place on record that the suspect, Mr. Edward Afful of Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, is NOT a PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, but a practicing nurse at the Psychiatry Hospital. Our investigations have revealed that Mr. Edward Afful is still practicing as a nurse. He has however just enrolled at Presbyterian University College to do a PA program on sandwich basis. This in no way makes him a Physician Assistant. It is hence surprising that the Daily Graphic and other News Agencies could not double check the actual professional status of the suspect before publishing. To be a Physician Assistant, one needs to undergo at least four years of training in an accredited institution for training Physician Assistants in the areas of Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Public Health, Psychiatry, Pathology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, District Health management among many others and pass creditably. He/ she is also required to pass a licensure examination organized by Medical and Dental Council of Ghana before being registered or licensed with a professional Identification Number (PIN). After this, the successful candidate must undertake a one year mandatory housemanship. It is after one has gone through all the above stated processes that a Permanent License by MDC is given to the individual and he/she can be accorded the Physician Assistant title. Physician Assistantship obviously is a very noble profession with high professional and ethical standards to deliver quality healthcare services to the Ghanaian populace. The attention of the media as well as all Ghanaians are being drawn to the fact that the suspect is not a Physician Assistant and hence it is very disdainful, unfortunate and unacceptable, for the news agencies to tarnish the image of this highly respected profession. We hence urge the Daily Graphic and other news agencies to rectify this misinformation urgently by rendering an unqualified apology to the Physician Assistant fraternity and also write a rejoinder to this effect within 24 hours. Failure to comply with above request will lead the association to seek redress appropriately. Thank you! Signed: ROBERT AWUDEY CENTRAL REGIONAL CHAIRMAN, GHANA PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS ASSOCIATION
It's sad that journalism in this country has deteriorated to arm chair journalism... The gentleman in question is a psychiatric nurse currently...but not a physician assistant as stated in this reportage... He is in PA school... But not yet a PA but still practicing as a mental health nurse... Pls get the facts right
