The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has said some Ghanaians living in Ukraine who were scheduled to be evacuated refused to show up.
The Ghanaians whose COVID-19 tests and air tickets were fully paid for by the government failed to show up to be evacuated home.
The ministry, in a statement issued on Tuesday, 8 March 2022, said it has noted with grave concern the refusal of some Ghanaian students to show up at the airport after they had expressed their willingness to be evacuated.
The statement continued: “This has resulted in the government of Ghana purchasing air tickets which remain unused as well as paying for COVID-19 tests for persons with no intentions of travelling.”
The Ministry also warned the Ghanaians that government will only pay for 2 nights’ hotel accommodation for all those received by its “staff and representatives and lodged in hotels in the countries neighbouring Ukraine and in other European countries. They will also be provided with air tickets to Ghana and have their COVID-19 tests paid for.”
It added: The government is, therefore, “entreating only Ghanaians who are willing to be evacuated to confirm their participation so as to avoid the dissipation of scarce public funds.”

Kofi, I would advice you don't talk about this E-Levy thing. Better ask the right questions before you go on the internet to spew what you don't know. Ghanaians pay taxes and this is what we pay, Personal Income tax is 30%, corporate tax is 25% and sales tax is 13%. What this means is that, 30% is deducted from your salary and anytime you buy "petrol" as you say, 13% of that amount is also what you pay as tax... Do you get it now? Why must Ghanaians pay extra 1.75% when you want to transact. We the customers pay service fees to the banks and the banks then pay corporate tax to the government so why then must the government now charge 1.75% for transacting? Please go and do your homework and come back.
The honorable minister is right, most of the students do not want to be evacuated to Ghana. They have decided to visit some relatives in the Schengen zones. I am a coordinator for Ghanaian students arriving from Ukraine to the Czech Republic. It is very unfortunate Govt have wasted money on air tickets for ppl who are not willing to go home. I perfectly understand why some students don't want to return home, they are just 3 months away from finishing 6years of studies, they are traumatized and confused. They are hoping the war will be over soon so they can return to school or better still if some of the universities in other European countries will absorb them for a top-up program. Let all remember our brothers and sisters fleeing the in prayers. Longlive Ghana!!! Longlive Nana Akuffo ADDO
