A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Michael Teye Nyaunu, has backed comments by the founder of the party over the suspension of deputy General Secretary, Kofi Adams who is allegedly scheming to cause the defeat of the government in the up-coming general election.
Jerry John Rawlings in a strongly-worded statement on Monday said the NDC has lost so much moral high ground and now one of the most truthful, forceful, logically minded personalities of integrity in the party leadership is being treated like an outcast to serve a parochial and unpatriotic interest.
Mr. Adams was suspended over an accusation that he was planning on scuttling the chances of the NDC in the upcoming general elections. A conversation between two men believed to be Mr. Adams and Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a leaked telephone recording revealed what seemded to be a grand machination to ensure that the party loses the December polls.
The party then suspended Mr Adams for 90 days pending an investigation by its Disciplinary Committee. Mr. Adams has however consistently maintained his innocence in the matter.
But speaking to XYZ News, Mr Nyaunu said the decision to suspend Kofi Adams will deepen the cracks within the party and subsequently cause its destruction.
It is very possible that they will be taking the division to the elections, he said, stressing that the party cannot go into the December polls without the backing of Mr. Rawlings.
The Lower Manya Krobo MP believes the decision to oust Kofi Adams is motivated by the partys quest to push out the Rawlingses.
You cannot spank Rawlings in the face Rawlings is more popular than the incumbent president.
Hon. Teye Nyaunu insists that the supposed attempt by some members of the party to push the former first couple out will backfire because they have single handedly built the party from the foundation.
We have embarked on an expensive experiment. It is an unfortunate decision to go into this expensive experiment. We are nine months away so we must endeavour to be doing things that will be bringing us together and not tearing us apart.
Another leading member of the NDC, is in good company with his colleague.
Dr. Josiah Aryeh, a former General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is thus, sounding a note of caution to party executives to be circumspect in dealing with such issues.
He is of the view that the statement by the founder is spot on.
In an interview with XYZ News Abigail Larbi on Monday, Dr. Josiah Aryeh who suffered a similar fate during his tenure as General Secretary condemned the decision by the party. According to him, the action taken is a clear indication that the executives have failed to learn from the past mistakes that caused their defeat in past elections.
What kind of selective amnesia is this? he asked adding, they should have learnt from the past.
He said, like him, Kofi Adams case will come to naught and that no investigation will be carried out to ascertain the veracity of the allegation.
When you leave your problems unresolved and you dont follow precedence, you are bound to self-destruct.
He believes the NDC has a death wish going into the December polls, as such decisions have the potential to browbeat people with dissenting views in the party and creating apathy in the process.
We say we are statesmen, we say we are democrats If we cant help our own people in the inner sanctum of the party how can we help the grassroots?
Dr. Aryeh said actions of some executives of the party are preventing well meaning members from showing their faces to help.
Kofi Adams has not been treated fairly If they fail to follow through with the investigation, then it will be unfair.
He accused the executives of running the party with an obsolescent mindset, which according to him has the potential of crippling the party going forward. He is therefore urging members to take cognizance of the effects of such decisions.
