A Member of the Council of State and former Central Regional Minister, Ama Benyiwa Doe has cautioned ladies venturing into politics not to sacrifice their marriages on the altar of political ambition.
Eulogizing the late Dr. Mary Grant who she described as a mother and family woman, Madam Benyiwa Doe said the late politician brought another side to the political coin. “I would want to draw attention to the fact that (Auntie) Mary was also a successful married woman. Some of us were not fortunate in love to remain in wedlock throughout, so people think when you go into politics, you cannot be successful in marriage. But Auntie Mary showed the other side of the coin”, she said.
The late Dr. Mary Grant reportedly passed away at the 37 Military Hospital on Sunday, 18th September, 2016. According to Ama Benyiwa Doe, the late politician “got into the PNDC when it had no recognition, at a time when it was popularly referred to as a group of young zealous persons, people who didn’t have ambition, who have gotten into government”.
She added, “So when someone as high as Auntie Mary Grant, a medical doctor for that matter, got into the PNDC, she was seen as someone who had come so low and in social arrangement, they will call it class suicide but that was Auntie Mary.” She was emphatic that the late Mary Grant helped stabilized the political atmosphere in the country when the PNDC came into power. Dr. Mary Grant died at the age of 88 years and left behind 6 children.
