The Second Vice Chairperson of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Susan Adu-Amankwah, has described as “hypocrisy” the barrage of criticisms levelled at Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate Gloria Akuffo over her revelation that she has two kids despite never being married.
Introducing herself to the Appointments Committee when she appeared before it on Saturday 21 January for vetting, Ms Akuffo said: “I have two children, never been married.”
This did not go down well with a section of the public who took to social media to urge President Nana Akufo-Addo to withdraw her nomination on the grounds of morality, adding that she would be a bad example to young girls.
But Ms Adu-Amankwah, who spoke on Class FM Monday January 23, argued that such social perceptions were wrong.
“I guess maybe it is our societal orientation but it is more [of] hypocrisy than anything else,” She said.
For her, there was no point being judgemental of the nominee when critics have no idea of the circumstances under which the former Deputy Attorney General had the children.
She wondered why men who have children by different women or have children out of wedlock are not subjected to the same “standards” of morality.
Additionally, she added that an Attorney General’s job description has no bearing on one’s marital status or that they have children.
In Ms Adu-Amankwah’s view, having children without being married will not affect Ms Akufo’s ability to execute her role in any way and it was time Ghanaians shunned such mentality.

FOR ONES GHANAIANS CAN DEFEND A WOMAN OF HER CALIBER. I'M PROUD OF ALL OF YOU DEFENDING HER AND MOST IMPORTANTLY PROUD OF HER FOR HAVING THE COURAGE TO MENTION THIS AT AN INTERVIEW OF THIS MAGNITUDE.I THINK OUR MOTHERS WHO HAVE NOT HAD STABLE MARRIAGE DUE TO ONE THING OR THE OTHER WHICH MIGHT NOT BE OF THEIR MAKING, I SAY, DON'T RELENT ON ORES. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR CHILDREN BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ASSETS OF THE NATION.
How many children does ex Prez Mahama have? How many with his wife and how many are outcome of extra marital affairs? Any help will be deeply appreciated. Thank you
I felt very bad for her immediately she made those revelations, but at the same time, l gave her a thumbs up for mustering courage to make public, that aspect of her private life. How many people could have done that. I saw the woman's posturing and it was full of humility. At a point, I thought she was even crying. In deed she was so humble. I wish her well in her new appointment.
It's rather unfortunate for people to think that way.I think we owe it a duty as Ghanaians to learn from our history and culture. Similar situations had happened in Ghana's political circles over the years but there were excellent performances. What is happening to the chief Justice designate could happen to any one of us be it MP,MINISTER, CHIEF, CLERGY or whatever and therefore should be ignored .
Ghanaians hate the truth that's why we are where we are, the honest woman has come out boldly to tell us hard facts about herself, how many women in this country can do this, instead of us to recommend her to encourage others to always speak the truth, nothing but the truth, we are here chastising her, what signals are we sending to others, why , is it an abomination to give birth out of wedlock, Madam Gloria Akuffo, I salute, u are indeed God fearing, you ve done what most Africans find it difficult to do, Shaaaame to the critics ,
Some people are just funny. There are some men who are unmarriageable because after having had one child with a woman, his attitude to commitment alone makes the woman think twice. So, some begin to think that okay I want at least two children and after that if he doesn't come around, I will walk. The man still seems to be his usual self so after two children and persistent demand for marrying her formally, she decides one day to leave that relationship which is not going anywhere. Between these people, it would be unfair to think of the woman as immoral because she had two children without being married. How about the man in the adultery scandal in the Bible? There so many immoral men walking around but the women take the flak.
I don't know why this should even be an issue. There are lots of men who have children out of wedlock and this never raises any eyebrows. Why should it be different for women? Her job description is to be the chief legal advisor of the government . What we should ask is if she knows enough law to be able to do this and not her marital status . He who is without sin should cast the first stone .
i agree with Susan. we are unfair and judgemental to our single mothers. Gloria was candid and this is a plus. our men can be irresponsible which is even dangerous
