A former National Security Coordinator and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah has lauded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s announcement to commence his much-touted ‘Free Education’ policy.
To him, the policy must not just be free, but “it must be quality. The quality is what we need not free. It shouldn’t be numbers but the quality of the number is what we must concentrate on.”
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Saturday, announced the implementation of its campaign promise to provide free public senior high school (SHS) education from the 2017/2018 academic year.
According to him, he is committed, "without any equivocation, without any reservation, without any doubt, to take Ghana to the stage where public Senior High School education will be free for every Ghanaian child."
The free public SHS education, he said, was aimed at building an educated populace for speedy national development and progress.
"By free SHS, we mean that in addition to tuition, which is already free, there will be no admission fees, no library fees, no science centre fees, no computer laboratory fees, no examination fees, no utility fees. There will be free textbooks, free boarding and free meals and day students will get a meal at school for free.”
"Free SHS will also cover agricultural, vocational and technical institutions at the high school level," - Nana Addo said when speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the 60th Anniversary celebration of Okuapeman School.
Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show dubbed Ghana Montie the former security capo cum teacher advised the Nana Addo-led administration to as well create job opportunities for graduates after school.
“It’s not just producing graduates, but what to do with them after education. The president should pay attention more on the quality than the numbers.
“The biggest danger is what to do with the graduates. The young unemployed is the biggest threat this country is facing,” he noted.

Can FREE SHS not be Quality? Oh, SELFISH leaders in Ghana. Can this man say that the Canadian High School (SHS) which is FREE & COMPULSORY is not quality? We have such men and women who always want some Ghanaians to be POOR so that they can rule them. Instead of supporting this brilliant ideas and help make it work, listen to him!
Please General, after being on TV to campaign for NDC in 2008 election by saying NPP is this and that, leave Nana Addo to implement his policy.
Only last week Gen Nunoo Mensah was saying 'he is the calibre of person Prz Nana Addo needs around him' and yet he can't agree with the 'signature policy ' of the president. Hmmm I rest my case
Don't worry if you feel the kitchen is getting hot for you, leave the country.
What will you prefer, educated unemployed youth or uneducated unemployed youth. We shall definitely have those who will be up there, average and those below the average but this but they will be useful citizens than not having the opportunity to go to school.
Why is this old man talking so much ? What is the deal with him ? wasn't he the same person under Mills who said NPP wasa party for the criminals so my question again is wasn't he satisfied with his former party ?
This man will never stop amazing me with thoughts and analysis. Your party just left government with such an abysmal performance and you are advising somebody to create jobs. How many jobs did you people create? You were rather scrambling for contracts and embezzling funds at every slightest opportunity. Please give us a break.. you could have done better by advising your government on some of these issues. Please brigadier if you are on retirement and have nothing constructive rest peacefully and stop the disturbance. Please we know you.. you are all hypocrites and thiefs advise your people to bring the cars and all other state properties. We are tired of these rot
As an educator, I think free education at Secondary School level is a surest way of developing the country. If you go to China and Asia countries, a Taxi driver can read and write and that is very important for human development. Every child must have that basic education to secondary level. Therefore making it free is huge positive step. Thanks Mr President. Fulfil all the promises and Ghanaians are behind you. I am not surprised some people have divergent views but that is democracy and allocation of national resources. If we all have the same priorities and how we assign resources in Ghana, there will be no party politics.
