Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed worry over the increasing spate of illegal mining activities across the country.
According to him, the recent water crisis in the country is as a result of ‘galamsey’.
Speaking at an event on the theme: “Efficient Utilisation of Natural Resources for Sustainable Socio Economic Growth in the Country”, in Accra on Friday 17 March, he said government would soon announce measures to deal with the scourge of ‘galamsey’.
He described as “disturbing” the problems caused by the activities of ‘galamsey’ and noted that government had the political will to deal with it.
“The scourge of ‘galamsey’ is something that we are all witnesses to. It’s very disturbing. If you go across the country and look at what is happening to our water bodies they are essentially red in colour …Water treatment plants have been shut down in a few places because of the pollutants in the water and the impact of galamsey. This is not something that as a country we should take lightly,” he stated.
“The water shortages that we are seeing across this country are very much linked to environmental degradation and the scourge of ‘galamsey’ and illegal small-scale mining in the vicinity of many water bodies in this country. We’ve been in office for about two months now and the president has requested that we come up with a policy paper. Some experts are currently working on this, specifically on ‘galamsey’. It will have to take a lot of political will to deal with it, but it has to be dealt with because the damage is going to be irreparable if we leave it as it is.”
Dr Bawumia disclosed that in a few weeks government would announce some major policies on dealing with the menace that ‘galamsey’ activities are posing in this country.

Hey, Barwumia, you now hold doctorate in mining? Wonders shall never end. All of us thought you were the man to arrest inflation and high cost of living in Ghana. Some us even boasted about you to our opponents. I remember some of your terms such as voodoo economics etc, but all of a sudden, since you were elected, I haven't heard you speak for five minute about the ailing economy. Why, are you on economic leave? Can you organize some lecture on the economy, to educate us on why the cedi has become a jet plane? We need some UNvoodoo and competent lecture on the economy, MR COMPETENT.
Worrying? Say who? You were the one who said you are the only one who can read and have the solutions to all of Ghana's problems, calling people incompetent. Now the ball is in your court, solve all our problems for us. Show us your Competency, he-who-knows everything.
what does he mean by its worrying ? you have our mandate to fix the problem, fix it and stop complaining . we did not vote for you to be complaining and tell us what is worrying or not. get to work and fix the problem now or shut your beak. but remember in 4 years me you will give account to us your employers. if you like only keep talking cos talk they say is cheap.
Since NPP took charge, Barwumia, the world most competent economist has never talked about the cedi that is running like a Jamaican sprinter. He has suddenly become a mining expert as well as supervisor general moving from one institution to the other just for a visit. He doesn't talk about appointment of 110 minsters, when about a year ago, he thought the NDC was wasting our public purse. May God help him and his nana Addo.
Mister, can you go to china and destroy the Chinese Government property? If no then STOP these chinese from destroying our waters and lands or we will NOT vote for your government next season.
we want you to talk about your incompetent fall of the ghana cedis which is now gh4.61 to $1 not about the use1ess Galamsey Worrying.
Whoever wrote that comments I agree with you. All of us are victims of this problem especially our chiefs and opinion leaders. If the government come up with measures backed by the police and the military, we would be able to eradicate this undesirable situation. Go for it NPP. If you do so I will vote for you this time in 2020.
The govt over the years have knowm about this problem but chose to do very Little or nothing at all.. We have allowed Chinese and other nationals to freely roam and destroy our land without stopping them. These people together with our own national have made big gains which the govt could have benefited from if things had been done properly. It is high time the present govt put an end to this. Use the army to shut down all these places.. Educate our chiefs and advise them to refraim from Selling lands to foreigners for a few hundred dollars.. Ghana should have a law banning sales of lands in the country to non Ghanaians. Maybe if we all try to be honest, things will get better in our beloved country.
