President Nana Akufo-Addo says it would be disastrous for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to ban members holding dual citizenship from contesting for positions in the party.
Though he said he is aware of the challenge that amendment sought to address, he preferred another means is rather used.
President Akufo-Addo was addressing party’s extraordinary delegates conference at the Baaba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday. The conference is expected to accept or reject several amendments to the party’s constitution.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) branch in Chicago had earlier warned that the proposed amendment on dual citizenship will seriously affect its membership. President Akufo-Addo concurred and declared, “That amendment would be a disaster for our party, it would lead to the collapse of our oversee branches and it is not constitutional.” The president also announced that the proposal that gives Members of Parliament the right to appoint members of the constituency executives of the party has been withdrawn.
“I am strongly against the measure and it is going to be withdrawn,” he stated. The president also “absolutely opposed” the proposal making the flagbearer, president, the leader of the party. He therefore asked the delegates that if that proposal is not withdrawn by the party’s National Council, they should reject it.
“That motion is against all precedents and tradition of this party…we do not need that amendment,” he explained. By Isaac Essel |3news.com|Ghana
