Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has described the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) as a ‘bogus’ entity.
According to him, EOCOs decision to storm the offices of the Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Georgina Opoku Amankwaah on Monday is a disgrace to the organization.
EOCO has been given 14 days to provide the embattled Deputy Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), Georgina Opoku Amankwaah, with findings of investigations into allegations of financial impropriety made against her.
The 14-day ultimatum was agreed upon after a dramatic show of force to remove Mrs Opoku Amankwaah from her office on Monday.
Reports indicate that when she arrived at her office around 11:00 am on Monday, three officials from EOCO arrived at the office shortly after to inform her that she was wanted at the head office of EOCO.
Mrs Opoku Amankwaah said at a press conference that she was later informed that if she could not be present at the EOCO head office on Monday, she could arrange to do that on Wednesday, January 17.
However, in the middle of her address to the media, heavily armed police officers from the Rapid Response Unit stormed her office in what was believed to be an attempt to remove her from her office by force.
The EOCO, it would be recalled, wrote to the EC demanding that two officers of the commission be made to proceed on leave.
EOCO in a letter dated July 4, 2017, addressed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei, says it is investigating “the loss of about GH¢480,000 from the Endowment Fund at the Electoral Commission.”
It says Deputy Commissioner, Georgina Opoku Amankwaah and Chief Accountant Kwaku Owusu Agyei-Larbi are the key suspects and as such, are assisting with investigations.
Reacting to the latest development, however, Mr. Kennedy Agyapong said he could not fathom why Mrs Opoku Amankwaah has been singled out when indeed all the commissioners under investigation are still in their offices.
Mrs. Charlotte Osei and Amadu Sulley, he noted are still at post and have not been asked to step aside for the investigation to commence, although Ms. Opoku Amankwaah is on suspension on the orders of the EC boss; a situation he considers as unfair.
“The principle by EOCO was wrong. EOCO is a bogus organization. They are very bias. I know there are officers who have been accused but why have they turned their guns on only one person. I don’t know that woman but I think they have not been fair to her ” he cried.
Mr. Kennedy Agyapong was speaking on Adom TV on Tuesday.
