The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it will restore 1 July of every year, Republic Day, as a public holiday as it used to be.
The 1 July holiday was scrapped by the Akufo-Addo-led administration.
It is now a commemorative day.
Republic Day signifies the attainment of Ghana’s republican status.
This year marks the 59th-anniversary of the attainment of Ghana’s republican status.
The NDC, in a statement to mark the day, said: “Sadly, today, the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has deemed it fit to degrade the importance of this great day from a full public holiday intended to celebrate the efforts of our forebears in our collective struggle to affirm the benefits of equality, liberty, freedom and justice, to a mere commemorative day in order to rob our gallant forbears the historical credit and recognition that they so richly deserve.
“The National Democratic Congress has had occasion to criticise President Akufo-Addo's attempts to rewrite the history of Ghana, downplaying the role of genuine patriots and placing his family and clan above all else.
“The NDC would want to assure all Ghanaians living everywhere that upon its assumption of office in January 2021, Republic Day will be accorded full recognition as one of the most important national days in our history.”

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF JULY 1 IF WE CELEBRATE MARCH 6? DO WE NEED TO CELEBRATE THE TWO DAYS IN ORDER TO PRONOUNCE THE LIBERATION OF GHANA FROM COLONIALISM. DID NOT THE ATTEMPT TO MAKE GHANA ONE PARTY STATE AND NRUMAH THE LIFE PRESIDENT OF GHANA MOTIVATED AND CONTINUE TO TARNISH THE DECLARATION OF THE FIRST REPUBLIC. AND DO WE NOT FIND THE FOURTH REPUBLIC MORE CONNECTED TO THE PEOPLE OF GHANA TODAY TO PORTRAY A BETTER POLITICAL CIVILIZATION FOR A BETTER FUTURE OF OUR NATION. IT IS SAD THAT SOME SO CALLED POLITICAL ELITE OF GHANA FIND IT DIFFICULT TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX TO APPRECIATE THE NEW DIRECTION OF PRAGMATIC POLITICS THAT INSPIRE THE CITIZENS TO OVERCOME THE SHORTFALLS OF THEIR PAST TO BUILD A ROBUST SOCIETY THAT TRANSFORM THE LIFE OF ITS PEOPLE. NDC HOPE TO TAKE GHANA BACKWARDS. THEIR WISH MIGHT NEVER HAPPEN.
NDC party with huge mediocrities in their front line politics.Who told them Ghanaian need holidays.NDC leadership must use their heads wisely and stop such an infertile promise
NDC 2020 MANIFESTO 1. Restoration of 1st July holiday 2. No contribution, no chop by NDC members 3. Cancel double track, meaning cancelling Free SHS 4. Allow Galamsey, but will regulate 5. End kidnappings 6. More money in our pockets, run a loose system
Lazy group of people. Come and see the money am receiving today. Tax would be paid and then government will use it for development.
and who told these bunch of incompetent and greedy bas-tar-ds that we Ghanaians are interested in any holidays? instead of proposing better and alternative policies they are interested in restoring holidays. such ***barred word*** of as a party
NDC, you are interested in holidays to enjoy your booty. Fortunately, you will not come to power in 2021 to change anything. Tell us policies and programmes that will impact positively on the lives of the majority of the citizens to get our votes. And stop beating about the ***barred word***.
While NPP promised to restore trainee nurses allowance to make an impact on the lives of trainee nurses and their family all you NDC people can come up with is restoration of a public holiday, is that one too a promise? A developing country with low productivity but more public holidays than the developed countries we go and beg from.
THATS GOOD.AND REMOVE THAT Y33Y3 4TH AUGUST HOLIDAY. PEOPLE ARE CONFUSED TODAY AND ARE INSULTING THE PRESIDENT LIKE THAT.
But who told you that you are coming back in 2021. Forget about this dream?
