Deputy Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mame Yaa Aboagye has lauded the plans by government to build 600-bed hostel facility for head porters popularly called "Kayayei".
She expressed sadness to see these head porters or Kayayie living under perilous conditions.
The government has revealed plans to provide accommodation for head porters in various communities in Accra.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta said in the 2020 Budget statement in Parliament on Wednesday November 13, 2019 that the construction of the hostel will begin in December 2019 at Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra.
“Mr Speaker, I am happy to announce that preparations are now complete and the construction of the first 600-bed ‘Kayayei’ hostel will commence in Agbogbloshie next month to provide accommodation and skills training to these vulnerable young women,” he said.
The NPP Deputy Communications Director commended President Nana Akufo-Addo and his government for fulfilling his promise to the head porters stressing that "this has always been my burden and a heart desire to see these hard working ladies have a decent place to lay their heads after a hard day's work"
"I am grateful to the President. Ghanaians are grateful and Kayayies are also grateful to the President. We say Ayekoo", she stated.
She was also optimistic about the commitment of President Akufo Addo’s administration to fulfill all promises to end the plight of Kayayeis in the coming year and asked Ghanaians to give the President another term in office.

A journey to the moon starts with a step. As the Akan saying goes, "yen ngyina nkrane mu ntete nkrane, to wits, problems are solved one after the other. First, they are to be given shelter, then training and finally, resettlement with requisite life skills. Only a visionary government will be able to decipher the Kayaye problem and solve it in this seemingly simple manner. Bravo, Monsieur le President(Mr. President).
I THINK ITS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIALS OF LIFE? 1. FOOD.2 CLOTHING.3 SHELTER AND THE REST SHALL COME. IF YOU SEE THE CONDITIONS IN WHICH THESE WOMEN LIVE, IT'S BEYOND BELIEF.THEY ARE NOT GOING TO BE HEAD PORTERS ALL THEIR LIVES.NOWAY. IF THEY HAVE A GOOD PLACE TO LAY THEIR HEADS AWAY FROM THE WICKED AND EVIL ELEMENTS OF DARKNESS THEN THEY CAN PROGRESS TO OTHER LEVELS OF LIFE.IS IT NOT BETTER THAN THE NDC TAXING THEM FROM THE MEAGER EARNINGS THEY MADE?
THIS IS A VISIONLESS AGENDA. AFFORDABLE HOUSES THAT HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND JUST NEED SOME FEW CEDIS TO COMPLETE FOR GOVERNMENT WORKERS ARE LEFT UNATTENDED TO. YET YOU THINK YOU CAN ENSLAVE LADIES BY BUILDING HOSTELS FOR THEM INSTEAD OF USING SUCH MONIES TO GIVE THESE LADIES (KAYAYE) BETTER PROFESSIONAL TRAINING. THIS IS A GOVERNMENT THAT DOES NOT THINK WELL OF LADIES AND THINK THEY (KAYAYE) MUST PEPERTUALLY REMAIN DEPENDENT AND MANIPULATIVE TO THE NPP PARTY. JUST THINK ABOUT IT YOURSELVES (NPP) IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT OF YOUR DAUGHTERS.
When will Ghanaian leaders be serious. Why are you encouraging kayaye in the first place? Why should people be carrying goods on their head? Is this a job to be encouraged? God help us
