Road contractors are asking the government to pay them upfront when giving them contracts for various road projects across the country.
According to them, though the government has started paying debts owned them, they don’t want their monies to be accumulate in the coming years.
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, Vice Chairman of the contractors association, Mr. Hammond Larbi explained they are ready to work but they cannot continue to provide services for government and run at a loss because the government always delay in paying them for various works done.
"We are aware that some funds have been provided for some road projects especially for the cocoa roads, the monies should be available for the contracts of the various cocoa roads that will be awarded," he said.
While presenting the 2020 Budget in Parliament on Wednesday, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta said the government will largely focus and prioritize road projects to improve infrastructure in that sector and bring an end to the cries of Ghanaians for better roads.
“Mr. Speaker, this is why we are going to focus more on fixing our roads across the country in 2020 and beyond. To get the road sector moving and contractors back to work, the government will pay 80% of all contractors,” Ken Ofori-Atta said.

EVEN DO BEFORE PAYMENT WE ARE NOT GETTING VALUE FOR MONEY, SO UPFRONT PAYMENT IS NO,NO, NO BIG NOOOOOOOO
I AGREE WITH THE CONTRACTORS FOR WHAT THE WICKED NPP GOVERNMENT DID TO THEM. CLOSING HIS EYES TO WORK THEY DID, CLASSIFYING THEM AS NDC. DENYING THEM OF THEIR DAILY BREAD AND LETTING THEM GO HUNGRY. NEXT TIME THEY WILL ALSO PUT IN MEASURES THAT WILL SECURE THEIR FUTURE.
WHAT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT? GHANA CONTRACTOR WANTS WHAT? PAYMENT IN ADVANCE? NEVER!!!! HA? EVEN WITH ADVANCE THEY ABANDON JOB HOW MUCH MORE FULL PAYMENT? THIS HAMMOND MAN IS TALKING AS IF HE DOES NOT KNOW HIS MEMBERS INCLUDING HIMSELF.
I agree with your submission but it shouldn't be an outright full payment since that takes away your being a business person marketing your wares. The road is your product so it must be ready forsale and paid as bought. So govt MUSTN'T delay payments when the product is ready in its right and corrupt-free approved form. So go for a 50/50 deal and ensure your pro-formas aren't packed with hidden corrupt figures. Gov't usually will pay 3-5 times the normal market price and that delays the payment and also the contractors continuous work on projects since it stifles availability and liquidity of cash to finance projects.
Which government in his right senses will do upfront payment for any construction work?. Ghanaian contractors have been doing shoddy work on our roads. Come to Tarkwa, the road construction is not yet complete but potholes have started emerging on the road. Ghanaian contractors should sit up
ever since road contract started going to Ghanaians as we all wished we have never seen a road lasting for more than three yrs. sometimes three months and the road is gone. i suggest strongly that road to Ghanaians must stop if we are serous and bring back German companies etc. The Ghanaian is greedy and all they think about is cars and houses
Please, let's be serious as a country, this is not permitted under any law in Ghana unless contractors provide advance guaranteed for only advance payment. Have they considered the possibility of people picking the cash and running?
no no, job first and pay.
