Hundreds on Saturday morning poured on the streets of Tamale to protest the decision of the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters register for the 2020 general elections.
Led by eight political parties who have indicated their opposition for the EC’s plan, the demonstrators marched through the principal streets of Tamale.
The demonstrators were made up of supporters of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Convention People’s Party (CPP), People’s National Convention (PNC), Egle Party, All Progressive Party (APC), Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Clad in red, they carried placards some of which read "drop the new voters register, Nana bring back GN bank not register,” among others.
They marched through the principal streets singing and chanting.
Dubbed "Tikusagi" which means "we won’t agree", the Tamale protest is the first in a series of demonstrations that the group has planned to protest the introduction of a new register.
Leaders of the various political parties who took turns to address the protesters "described the decision by the EC to compile a new register as a deliberate attempt to create disaffection in the country".
The Member of Parliament for Tamale South and Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu stated that the NDC will not accept any new voters register for the upcoming elections unless the old register that made President Akufo-Addo to win the 2016 elections.
"We don't want any new voters register, we want the register that made President Akufo-Addo to win the 2016 elections, the register that was used for the referendum and the district level elections," he said.
The leader of the APC, Mr Hassan Ayariga also admonished Ghanaians to stand up against the compilation of a new register in the interest of the nation.

Asiedu Nkatia we were here when Challotte Osei decided to change the whole country's EC'S logo. What did you guys say? Does why i always says Ndc is a satanic organization.Look 2020 let all Ghanians vote for you guys plus HE Nana Akuffo Addo and family GOD and i say Almighty God will never ever give it to you guys.satanic party ndc.May the Almighty God dissolve this satanic party period.
What does a law-abiding political party do, if the sitting government is not doing something right? Less so if what the government is doing is not a "priority" in the eyes of the opposition? By the way, is the NDC assigning to itself the status of a governing party? Someone should remind them they're NOT the party in government. You can oppose a decision but you risk police “handling“ if you attempt to 'stop" a government program. Can anyone in the NDC explain what is NEGATIVE about a nation attempting to develop an improved electoral register? The NDC should ask itself why it is always on the wrong side of history when it comes to electoral reforms in this country. Such a grouping of a political party!!!
NPP just want to steal the elections because they know they will lose. NPP has collapse more jobs and if he changes he will lose and if he stop too he will lose. The grounds is not good at all for NPP second term.
You are just a pathetic follower of NPP. Get yourself something meaningful to do. This new register shouldn't be our priority at this time. If you, NPP, and EC truly love your country you shouldn't support this exercise because we could use this money for more pressing important things such as addressing the infrastructure needs of SHS, schools under trees etc.
SOME PEOPLE ARE BECOMING USE LESS IN GHANA. HOW A WHOLE MINORITY LEADER ASK SUCH A USE LESS QUESTION BY QUESTIONING THE LEGITIMACY OF HE NANA ADDO. WERE WE NOT IN THIS COUNTRY WHEN TONY LITHUR SAID WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE 2012 ELECTION WAS AN ADMINISTRATIVE ERROR AND THEREFORE EX-PRESIDENT MAHAMA ACN'T BE FAULTED WITH THOSE MALPRACTICES. DID GHANAIANS QUESTIONED MAHAMA'S LEGITIMACY? OR DID SOMEBODY QUESTIONED OR CHALLENGED THE DECISION OF THE SUPREME COURT AFTER RULING AT END OF THE DAY? WERE WE NOT IN THIS COUNTRY WHEN DR AFAR GYAN USED JUST FEW MONTHS TO CREATE ADDITIONAL CONSTITUENCIES. NDC AND ITS JOKERS SHOULD BE READY FOR DEC 7 2020 WHERE PERMANENT RED WILL BE SHOWN TO THEM
