Mr Benjamin Kpodo, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho Central in the Volta Region has declined invitation to serve on the 40-member Committee set up by Government to “bring the cedi back on track.”
He said though “it is good government acknowledged that the cedi is no longer under control and the need to find means to arrest it”, forming a Committee to arrest its free fall was ridiculous and not the way to go.
Mr Kpodo who said this at a News conference organised by National Democratic Congress in the Volta Region at the Volta Press Centre in Ho, said "it is not my responsibility in this government to go on a cedi-rescuing mission, but my responsibility to rescue the entire country from the misrule.”
The MP, who is a member of the Finance Committee in Parliament and the only National Democratic Congress (NDC) "personality" nominated to serve on the committee said he had good reasons not to serve on the Committee.
The MP said aside the fact that “I was not consulted, not even the courtesy of a phone call asking me if I would like to serve on that Committee was made and we (NDC), invited them to Akosombo for us to get together to see how we could move the economy of Ghana forward, but they refused and told us that they have the men, they have the women and whatever to manage the economy well.”
The government through the Ministry of Finance, on Friday, January 17, formed a Committee made up of eminent individuals with knowledge in economics, finance, imports and exports, trade and investment to investigate the cause of the free fall of the cedi against major trading currencies especially the US dollar.
The Committee known as the "FX Development Committee" with Mr Ken Ofori Atta, Minister of Finance as its Chairman has a task of investigating the structural causes for the depreciation of the cedi and proposing measures to stabilise the currency of the world’s second-biggest cocoa producer, which now trades at GH¢5.64 to $1 from about GH¢4.27 to $1 by the end of 2016.
The News conference was to assess the three years of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the state of the Volta Region.
Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu who addressed the media spoke about abandoned projects in the Volta region and other parts of the country and stated the readiness of the NDC to complete all projects and "rescue the country from the hardships."

This one too na by force? If the government is giving people like you who don't talk in Parliament throughout the 4years and u decline, its your own beef. After all, the NPP has managed the cedi better than NDC. Still the fundamentals are good. The economic indicators are good. 4more for Nana.
THIS TIME WE OPEN OUR EYES VERY WIDE. WE NO SIT DOWN MAKE YOU CHEAT US ALL THE TIME. IN FACT WE ARE NOT FOLEFOOLE PEOPLE
THE NPP RODE AT THE BACK OF HATRED, LIES, JEALOUSY, HALLUCINATION TO COME TO POWER. THEY WILL STILL NOT BE HUMBLE. THEY WANT TO TRICK HONORABLE MP. YOU THINK THE NDC ARE ***barred word*** AND CAN NOT REASON. LOOK AT THE WAY THEY EVEN DID THE INVITATION. ON RADIO ANNOUNCEMENT, 'TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN', WHAT AN INSULT TO HIS PERSON AND INTEGRITY. 2020 WE GO SHOW NANA
SO THE VICE PRESIDENT HAS FAIL TO ARREST THE CEDI FALL. HE HAS RUN AWAY AND IT IS NOW A COMMITTEE THAT SHOULD INVESTIGATE. OH WHAT A FAILURE. COMMON ECONOMICS TELLS US THAT IF YOU FAIL TO PRODUCE YOU WILL IMPORT. MORE IMPORTS WITH LESS EXPORT=CEDI FALL. SO BAWOMYA DID NOT NOT KNOW THIS. 2020 WE GO SHOW NANA
It was even gravious mistake to have even invite this man to be part of tbe committee. What does he know about cedi depreciation?
So where are the MEN? And Osafo Marfo did same during the Senkye accord, have forgotten? Where are economic management team that the vice president said they the best for this country? Posterity will judge you all politicians.
By their deeds, you would get to know them. If you asked me, I would say Hon. Kpodo is not qualified to be a politician let alone be a member of Parliament. To decline that opportunity to express his opposing views about the economy for mother Ghana is very sad and unfortunate. A true democrat would not like to miss that chance to demonstrate the views of a potential Government in opposition. If you do appreciate the fundamental principles of Democracy and are accorded the privilege to come so far to represent your people in Parliament you wouldn't like to disappoint your people when it comes to contributing to improving their livelihood. This brings me to my unflinching disproval of the NDC stance of opposition party politicking. It seems to me NDC turns to be an election machine when they are in opposition. To take up a formidable opponent challenge to convince the electorates that they have what it takes to be in Government to turn things positively around becomes a mirage. All lost in falsehood, baseless propaganda derived from trivial issues against the ruling party. Competing with opposing views, well-thought policies to turn things around and visionary leadership in which the electorates can draw their hopes leave much to be desired.
Use-l es government, where is the so called economies, the vice president? within 3 years you have moved the Cedi from 4.2 in 2016 to about 5.6 or more to a dollar, the difference of 1.4 ( an average of 0.47 per year )and still have the audacity to say you are doing better. Whilst NDC in 8 years moved the Cedis from 1.2 to 4.2, a difference of 3 Cedis ( an average of 0.38 per year ). Means NDC has rather performed better than NPP.
I don't think it's cool to reject an opportunity to help restore the value of yhe cedi. At the end of the day, it's the ordinary man on the street who suffers. I hope he reconsiders his poor decision to work for his constituency and the country at large. Being a citizen means doing all you can to uphold all the core values of the nation. Let's just say Jospong and Glico group of companies decide not to work because they belong to a certain party or faction of a party. Please reconsider, your childish behavior.
YOU THINK HE IS ***barred word***. THE MAN IS BOLD ENOUGH TO REJECT A SET UP FROM THE PRESIDENT BECAUSE OF HIS PERFORMANCE. CHECK HIS PERFORMANCES AND YOU WILL KNOW WHY THE PRESIDENT WANTS HIM TO BE ON THE RESCUE TEAM. WE HAVE THE MEN AND NOW YOU WANT TO BE HELPED. FANFOOLERS, WE ARE UP NOW AND WON'T BE ***barred word*** BY YOUR NICE ENGLISH ANYMORE.
