The General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr John Boadu, has dared the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to boycott the planned voter registration exercise yet to be conducted by the Electoral Commission if it is indeed against the compilation of a new register.
The NDC and five other opposition political parties have kicked against the new registration announced by the Electoral Commission and have held two street protests in Tamale and Kumasi to express their disapproval of the move.
But speaking in a television interview with Accra-based Citi TV on Tuesday [January 21, 2020], Mr Boadu said the NDC is being disingenuous in its opposition to the new register.
“While demonstrating, they [NDC] are [also] motivating their people to go out there and register. So, the good people of this country shouldn’t be deceived by this deception. We are waiting for the Electoral Commission to come out with the days and plan for the movement of their machines and the periods for the registration exercise for us to get ourselves registered. If the NDC believes in what they are saying, they should boycott it when it gets to the registration date. Election or registration is not compulsory in this country,” he said.
New voters’ register brouhaha
The EC’s decision to compile a new voters’ register as well as upgrade its election management system has been met with opposition from the six political parties.
However, after Tuesday's street protest in Kumasi the opposition parties announced that they have suspended subsequent street protests.
The NDC’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo addressing the demonstrators in Kumasi on Tuesday said the suspension is to allow for the EC’s Eminent Persons Advisory Body to intervene to get the EC to grant them audience at an IPAC meeting.

It's quite funny how power can absolutely corrupt small minds. How do you intend to register all potential voters in 6 weeks? Or may be Bawuliar drones will be used to register people? I am sick of this hypocrisy from NPP. We saw how they behaved when they were in opposition, today hmmm, a word of advice. Power is like holding an ice cube in the hot desert. It's just a matter of time before the ice melt away living you to face the harshest desert condition. Good luck Ghana.
JOHN BOADU, DON'T JUST WORRY YOURSELF AT ALL WITH EITHER NDC SHOULD BOYCOT THE REGISTRATIONOR OR TO GO AND REGISTER. MY UNCLE HAS ALWAYS ADVISED ME THAT THE MOST DANGEROUS PERSON IS NOT THE ONE THAT TALKS MUCH BUT THE ONE THAT IS QUIET.
Surprised? Don't be a jokerrr. NDC has no case so you and your schit Mahama must go to Helll and stay there if you like
I'm surprised that the government is strongly defending the compilation of the new register even more than the so-called independent EC itself. Isn't it amazing? If your records will win you the confidence of the masses, why change the register that brought you into office on the stroke of an election? You complain of "no money" for development projects such as roads and education infrastructure. But you think over GHC400 million to compile a fresh register is alright. You are not bothered by the inconvenience of the electorate standing in the scorching sun first to register and two, to vote. Please, the youth, think! These are some of the reasons why we are required to be 18 years or above before qualifying to vote.
The leadership of the NDC deceived their followers to boycott the Ghana card but quietly went to register themselves..... They can boycott the EC registration too.
