The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at the National Peace Council for their latest call on them to stop the needless attacks on the Electoral Commission.
According to the NDC, the Peace Council is refusing to take the bull by the horn and call a spade a spade when it comes to issues involving the EC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Peter Boamah Otukonor explained that the call by the Peace Council has rather come late as nothing will stop the opposition party from impressing on the electoral body to do what is right.
"We have received a letter from the Peace Council but their call is rather late, they should engage the Electoral Commission rather than trying to engage us instead," he said.
He noted that they still stand by their earlier position and argument that the Electoral Commission is doing the bidding of the ruling NPP.
NDC's Claim
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), last week, accused the EC and the National Identification Authority (NIA) of devising means to deny about 11 million Ghanaians the chance to vote in the upcoming 2020 general elections.
The plans, the National Chairman of the party, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo believes, were to rig the elections in favour of the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
He explained that the decision by the EC to use only the Ghana Card and passport as the only required documents to get registered as a voter in the country was a calculated plan by the Akufo-Addo administration to rig the upcoming elections.
Stop Needless Attacks On EC
Following the barrage of attacks on the EC by the NDC after the state electoral body submitted a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) to parliament to pass legislation that will enable citizens to use the Ghana Card and the passport for registration into the voters’ register, General Secretary of the National Peace Council, George Amoh, affirmed the Independence of the Electoral Commission.
He further admonished all stakeholders especially political parties to allow the state body to execute its constitutional mandate without let or hindrance.
The EC had scheduled the registration for 18th April, 2020 but was compelled to postpone the all-important exercise due to the lockdown measures instituted by the government to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. The EC added that a new date would be announced for the exercise when restrictions are eased.
Impossible to rig elections
Meanwhile, the EC released a statement on Friday, insisting that it is practically impossible to rig election these days.
The statement signed by Ag. Director of Public Affairs at the EC, Sylvia Annoh, said, the EC, as an independent body, is mandated to conduct free, fair and transparent elections within the confines of the law and will continue to perform its functions as such without fear or favour.
She said it is impossible for the Commission to conspire with any political party or institution as being speculated by Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo and the NDC since the electoral processes remain transparent at all levels.

Oh I’m so so sad that NDC is not learning because they have done this from day one of Jean Mensah and no change of mind so I think it’s too late now they should change their strategy if they want to join the race. We are NOT going to fly on Airbus with an incompetent pilot through dumso to imf anymore when little babies with sharp teeth are on board and land us on Woyomey’s backyard. NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU
Listen to this Adamu too!!
Teddy I like your grammar but not where you have pitched your "tent"...there is nothing wrong to support the NDC but can you just tell or give me one tangible reason why the NDC is against a new voters' register? Just one. It does not lie in the bosom of any of those individuals and organizations you enumerated to decide for the EC. Not too long ago (2016) we were admonished by President John Mahama to leave the EC to do it work because no one could/can control the EC. So what has changed between then and now? What will the NDC in particular lose if we have a new register? Please tell us.
@Yaw & dcdcd. Your comments make interesting reading. Suddenly anyone who speaks against the EC's decision to compile a new Voters Register becomes an nation wrecker. You know deep in your thoughts that what Jean Mensah is not the right thing. CDD, CODEO, IMANI, Kwaku Baako, Akoto Ampaw, some Religious Bodies, and many other high profile personalities including CSOs have all advised the EC to abandon the idea of a new Voters Register; but all to no avail because of one man's Presidential interest. Time will soon tell.
NDC CAN GO & BURN THE SEA! WHEN DID THEY EVER WIN ELECTIONS IN GHANA? AS IF WE DO NOT KNOW THEM! MCTHEEEEEW!
Frankly, I don't understand what NDC is about? NDC is saying Ghana belongs to them and hence they get anything they ask for. why people are listening to this NDC fantasy? Why are we pampering them? How? Let NDC do their worse. Reasonable people in NDC like Alabi, 2nd Dep. Speaker are not talking. EC, listen to me once. Don't bother about NDC, let NDC live in Chuckoo land and dream. EC do what is right because you can never change their DNA. NDC is against everything. They want such a project like NIA Ghana card to fail so that non-Ghanaian will benefit from free things given to Ghanaians. Even, US, the richest nation on earth cannot everybody in world to benefit from their wealth.
If the NDC would not want to be engaged by the Peace Council then the EC should be left to do its work. It is very funny to think about people who feel that the whole world should bow to their demands because they are more human than others. Have they soon forgotten how they beat NPP protesters during their era? Did Ghana burn? You can cry out as loud as you can but you can never have your way. Let state institutions operate based on law and not your demands please.
If NDC disagrees with new voter, they should go to court or decline participation in new voter registration and voting. Simple.
If not politics, see these two personalities, and look at Otukunor who is he even to have the opportunity to talk them, let alone to insult? May God have mercy on us.
F00l!sh man. EC is going ahead with their work, try and stop them and let's see.
