Atik Mohammed has lambasted Ghanaians for disregarding the COVID-19 health protocols.
Ghana's COVID-19 case count, as at Wednesday, July 8, 2020, had risen to 22,822 after 854 new cases.
Over 17000 persons, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), have recovered from the disease.
Speaking on Peace FM's ''Kokrokoo'', Atik Mohammed blamed Ghanaians for contributing largely to the increase in the COVID-19 case count.
To him, looking at the rate of the virus infections in the country; ''we have now transcended crisis. We're heading towards a tragedy''.
He believed this is based on the attitude of Ghanaians saying ''attitude has always, in my view, being the bane of Ghana's progress. When you take sanitation, the biggest challenge is attitude. When you go into the civil and public services, the problem is attitude.
''In fact, almost every facet of our national life, the problem of attitude; that's what is worrying and we're treating this crisis with similar mindset. Some people don't even believe there is something called COVID that has the tendency to even claim someone's life. There are people who still believe COVID doesn't exist and even if it does, it doesn't have that power to take someone's life...And that is, in my view, the reason why we're getting the increased number of confirmed cases because the attitude is terrible.''
Atik Mohammed called on the entire nation to treat the pandemic with uttermost seriousness, ensuring a strict adherence to the safety protocols, particularly regarding the mandatory wearing of nose masks.
He wondered why people have refused to put on the masks and asked the appropriate authorities to enforce the Executive Instrument (E.I) 164 that mandates all Ghanaians to wear nose or face masks when in public and failure will attract a fine or jail sentence up to 10 years or both.
