It has emerged that some Members of Parliament (MPs), most of who are first timers, go to the House in Uber.
MP for South Dayi constituency, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, revealed this on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Thursday, stating he has text messages as evidence to back his claims.
“There are a lot of members, especially on the Minority side. We have our platforms where they always complain that they don’t have an official car and come to work in Uber. I can show you those messages to prove that they are not making this issue up,” he said.
He said his personal car for instance was acquired through a loan he took from Parliament in the 7th parliament.
But he said for someone who does not have an official car, it would be very difficult to travel to their constituencies and discharge their duties.
The Finance Ministry on Tuesday, July 6, presented to Parliament, a request by the government for a $28 million loan from the National Investment Bank to procure vehicles for the 275 MPs and another for a $3.5 million car loan for members of the 8th Council of State for them to purchase vehicles.
Addressing the floor of the House, Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare, said that the medium-term $28 million loans are to be paid back by the members in the course of their four-year term as MPs.
This request has, however, been condemned by members of the general public and scores on social media. According to many, procuring such a loan amidst the adverse effects of Covid-19 on the economy is not the right step to be taken by the government.
Mr Dafeamekpor stated the loan is not compulsory, adding the MPs have the choice to take or not.
“MPs are the only category of article 71 holders who are not given an official vehicle. So if the agreement is that we are given a loan to purchase official vehicles, I think it is very wrong. My position is that the government should take steps and get us official vehicles to perform the functions of our office in the next four years like it is done for all the other categories,” he said.

If I decide to comment on this, I'll end up insulting all the MP's and even the sitting president so I'll just say this. Whatsoever a man sows he shall reap. And if you continue to create hardship and enrich yourself and family, don't be surprised if what happened in Haiti happens in Ghana.
Going to work by Uber is not bad Mr Mp. Here in the Uk some ministers and MPs go to work on the bus or use the train. Most of the time David Cameron was in office , He commuted by train. Please you were not voted for to be served. You are there to serve the people. You are not walking to work . So you should not be crying for official cars. Can the citizens also get such soft loans to buy their cars and stop using trotro to work. AS LEADERS WE MUST LIVE BY EXAMPLE. Until we are focused on alleviating the plights of the people we should not be seeking to make our lives comfortable. LEADERSHIP IS NOT FOR SELFISH PEOPLE. IF YOU CANNOT SERVE IN HUMILITY JUST LEAVE FOR THOSE WHO CAN TO DO THE JOB.
I am very disappointed the statement is coming from the MP for south - Dayi in the Volta region when his constituency is saddened with the worse roads ever. MPS only agree on issues concerning their selfish gains . shame on them. God is watching them
MP you're 'sia paa. Where did those Uber MPs get funds to pay for their campaigns and and their way through to your ***barred word*** parliament house? Anyway, what's wrong with going to work on train, bus, trotro or uber? GHANA politicians think every ghanaian is a ***barred word***. After all we had no parliament the whole of 80s and we didn't die. Good Bless Twene Jonas
This African mentality ***barred word*** must stop. You go to parliament in Uber so what? Who cares if you go to work on a bus or train or even by walking? The important thing is your performance. I believe the parliamentarians can arrange to acquire their means of transportation without state intervention. After all they are able and capable to pay bribes to gullible people to vote for them.
Go to office in Uber and so what? You apply for job and gotten it , how to go to work is up to you Does it mean that those voted must also rewarded in any form for reason being that they gave you the job. If some recommendations are important equally providing vehicles for MPs also not right. The incompetence of NDC is real for every individual to observe. The leadership of NDC is becoming rotten eggs .and that will prolong their stay in opposition.
