The National Chairman of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has backlashed President Akufo-Addo for his alleged refusal to append his signature to the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill passed by the Parliament of Ghana.
Johnson Asiedu Nketiah stated that the President's hesitance to openly declare his stance on the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill is a reflection of a lack of courage and accountability as leader of the country.
In an interview with Asempa FM on Wednesday, March 27, General Mosquito as he is popularly known, criticised the President for allegedly using the Judiciary to avoid taking a definitive position on the bill.
He argued that if President Akufo-Addo truly intended to act on the Bill, he would have done so by now, urging Ghanaians to exert pressure on the President to make his stance known and cease evading the topical issue.
"The truth is that he doesn’t dare to say his position on the bill. That is why he wants to shift that responsibility to the judiciary or another person so he can later go and stand somewhere to say that he didn’t sign the bill. If he wanted to do something about the bill, he would have done it,” he stated.
Nevertheless, Mr Asiedu Nketiah highlighted a disparity between the statements made in Parliament and the actions observed outside its chambers.
“He doesn’t want people to know that he is not in support of the anti-LGBT+ bill that is why there are some heddles. That is the truth.
"If he had been able to stand his ground to say that he was not in support of the bill, his MPs would have also stood their ground to say that they were not in support.
“But he is not able to say that and his MPs also do not want to disagree for them to be tagged as opposed to the bill. In parliament, they all say they agree but when they move out, they act differently,” he added.

Elli or whatever you are, your kind is a bigger problem to Africa. You're an African, but you want to over copy westerners and become overly liberal. You're ok for a person who commits an incest in secret to be jailed when it becomes public knowledge but not LGBTQ offenders? That's the same overly "preman" mentality that Nana Addo went to promise the westerners that "it is bound to happen", so now he has to resist anything that will hinder his prophecy. We are Africans, we can't be like the whites but we can be our best selves, we have not reached the level that they are but if we are guided by wisdom and we pick up the relevant things from them, we can exceed their level with time. You guys should stop the "premans3m"
This bill is purely political, how do you jail someone may practicing something in his or her bedroom, since we heard of this LGBT thing in Ghana, has anybody being brought before the law courts, what even shock me is the posture of the clergy, you want someone jailed because of this and go to prisons to preach to them to repent, some may spiritual and was expecting the clergy to get the government to open therapy centers where they will help them to reform. We Africans are always in a hurry to pass judgment but not ready to help people grow and change. The church in Africa is just a business and a social club.
