A 2-1 defeat against Internacional on the last day of the season saw Figueirense finish 12th in the Brazilian league.
A win would have seen Figueirense finish 11th but the reaction of their players after the defeat suggested a lot more was riding on the game.
Internacional came from behind to win 2-1 and both teams had two players sent off. However, one Figueirense player in particular took exception to the performance of the referee and run after him at full time.
An Internacional player then attempted to shield the referee from said Internacional player before a melee ensued with the referee showing a clean pair of heels to get away from what was turning into a mob.
Such was the severity of the situation, riot police had to intervene to protect the referee.
